“Sobbed over gregory the gargoyle” – The Sandman episode 2 fans react to Cain and Abel’s story, The Fates’ 3 witches, Goldie & more

The Sandman episode 2 introduces more new characters from the comics’ lore starting with Cain (Sanjeev Bhaskar) and Abel (Asim Chaudhry) from the Dreams kingdom and Gregory the Gargoyle, a fan-favorite character that met an unfortunate quick death. In addition, Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) also meets The Fates consisting of the Three Sisters, who are dreams only hope of learning the whereabouts of his three tools – his sand, ruby and helm. The second episode has gotten Sandman fans particularly vocal about Gregory’s death.

Morpheus is back but the lord of Dreams requires his powers to restore the world back to its colorful dream-filled state. However, with Ethel Cripps (Joely Richardson) and her son John Dee (David Thewlis) in possession of the powerful sigils, he is forced to observe the only remaining wholesome creature of the kingdom, Gregory’s life-force, a creation of the Dream domain to help him gather the offerings for the Fates.

The VFX sequences during Morpheus’ journey into dreams have particularly impressed comic fans.  And the introduction of the notorious dysfunctional brothers’ murderous backstory was the cherry on top (Lucky for Abel, Morpheus got Goldie to make up for Gregory, right?).

After earning a few cryptic responses from the three witches, Dream learns his sand was once in possession of a person named Constantine while the helm was bought by a demon and the ruby was passed on from a mother to a son. The episode namedropping a female descendant of John Constantine has also piqued DC fans’ interest in the Netflix adaptation.

Coming to Ethel, a damsel in distress turned Tomb Raider has led a flamboyant life. She’s an art thief and a woman of many faces in the last 90 years thanks to a trade-off of Sandman’s tools which got her the amulet of protection. Before dream gets to have a chat, The Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook) pays Ethel a visit but he gets a shocker of his own from the amulet of protection after his plans of intimidation to find Ruby’s location goes wrong.

After getting Cortinthian off her back, Ethel meets John in an asylum of sorts or plainly put a prison. David Thewlis portrays a grown adult living in a teen’s body personality as John Dee, the last new face of Sandman episode 2. While his character was expected to have aged around 70, the ruby seems to have played its part in keeping him young. The mother and son’s strained interaction in their brief scene hint at larger brewing trouble for Morpheus.
