Since the release of Eternals, some Marvel fans are under the presumption that Star-Lord could be among the most powerful beings in MCU, due to the Celestial lineage he once shared with Ego. Although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 shows Peter Quill sacrificing his cosmic powers after defeating his father, some part of the fandom still finds it hard to believe the leader of the Guardians is in fact just a man.
Director James Gunn, who’s currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, was quick to jump in to clarify that Star-Lord gave up his abilities in the sequel. However, some argued over the character’s genetics possibly holding on to some of the cosmic powers. Nonetheless, Gunn interjected to simplify why there’s no turn-around for Star-Lord’s powers. Systems are systems and when System A is powered by System B, that power would cease to be if System B was destroyed.

Long-time fans of the franchise chimed in to echo Gunn’s statement. While Star-Lord may have lost his Celestial powers, it seems the character’s arc still has more to offer in the upcoming third installment.
Following in sequel’s route, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will dip its feet in the world of celestials as Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock is set to make his debut. The character was initially teased in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 post-credits scene featuring Elizabeth Debicki’s Ayesha.
Gunn first confirmed a threequel was greenlit by Marvel Studios back in April 2017. After year-long delays due to several unforeseen circumstances, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finally began filming earlier this week. The director announced the news with a polaroid picture of the main cast reunited. The director tweeted, “It’s been a strange & long & at times challenging journey to get here, but the obstacles along the way have only made this moment more blissful. Back on set with my Guardians family for the first day of shooting #GotGVol3.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to release on May 5, 2023. Gunn is also set to write and direct the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, releasing on Disney Plus in December 2022. Added, the director is also serving as an executive producer on I Am Groot Disney Plus series.
