Set photos from James Gunn’s threequel MCU flick indicate Chukwudi Iwuji’s involvement in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is apparently to portray as High Evolutionary, a classic Marvel antagonist character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the 60s. An image spotted on the set with graffiti showing a menacing red face has many convinced it’s the iconic mask belonging to the individual known for creating Counter-Earth. Surprisingly, the alien residing planet seems to play a part in the third installment as well.
The much-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is about a week away from wrapping up its over 100-day principal photography shoot. The last few days have been a treat for Marvel fans with new set photos of Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord and Karen Gillan’s Nebula spotted wearing comic-accurate costumes. The images courtesy of JustJared also showed a few extras wearing practical alien props indicating it could be the High Evolutionary’s experiments from counter-Earth, genetically modified beings with animal and human features.

Fortunately, another set photo from paparazzi Atlanta Filming showed a few more artworks, one particular with features of High Evolutionary. So the new set photo from the folks at Cosmic Circus more or less is our first proof that Iwuji will appear as the villain. So far, the Peacemaker star hasn’t confirmed his character though, in an interview with Variety, he stated that his role requires an “extremism’ unlike his DC role for the John Cena starring HBO Max series.

“The production is so big. James and I, we’re picking up where we left off,” Iwuji said at the time. “[The character] is very different from Murn. It requires different stuff from me. The way James works with me is pretty much the same, which is he trusts my choices – but at the same time when I give him a choice, he’s ready to push it further. He’s making me push myself. This character needs an extremism that I didn’t need to really tap into in Peacemaker that I’m tapping into here. Our relationship remains the same, one of enjoyment, mutual love and trust.”
“It’s a lot different. Murn is a very contained guy with bursts of anger and emotion. What I’m dealing with is a completely different guy, who, let’s just say, is the extreme opposite of Murn in many ways,” the actor added. “It’s a different kind of world and universe.”
It should be noted that though Iwuji’s on board the movie, details regarding his character are just speculations based on recent updates. Gunn is yet to officially reveal his role.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will arrive on May 4, 2023. The first two films are available to stream on Disney Plus.
