‘Gunn told me..’: David Ayer reveals DC Studios CEO will release Suicide Squad’s directors cut, supporters react: ‘Ayer cut is coming’

The Release the Ayer Cut movement has paid off according to a recent update from Suicide Squad director David Ayer and fans only have James Gunn to thank for it. The filmmaker continues to share behind-the-scenes stills like Jared Leto‘s Joker from his 2016 DC Film to sate fans’ desire for the director’s cut. While the Ayer cut is TBA and does not have a release date, it seems like it will have land one sooner or later.

The Ayer cut might finally have its Snyder cut moment though its unclear when it may exactly happen. David Ayer faces criticism on a daily basis for continuing to strive for Ayer Cut’s release. However, the detractors pale in comparison to the huge wave of supporters who continue to hound Warner Bros. Discovery and the DC Studios CEO James Gunn for the 2016’s Suicide Squad directors cut.

Ayer has mostly responded to the fan movement #ReleasetheAyerCut by sharing never before seen looks of Joker. Recently, the filmmaker released another such image of the clown prince of crime though a user on Twitter/X called it out as an image that was already shared in 2016.

David posted a long message on Twitter detailing his experience in trying “to navigate this situation with grace”. The director got candid about the “genuine curiosity and interest” from one section of the DCU fandom while “another group of people that have fun mocking the film”. Even so, David chose to highlight how the 2016 film continues to draw cinephiles into a discussion.

While acknowledging the organic and real interest in the cut, he revealed “Gunn told me it would have it’s time to be shared.” But added that he first deserves to launch his DCU “without more drama about old projects”.

Unlike the Snyder cut, the butchering of Suicide Squad by the past regime at WB occurred while Ayer was still in charge. The studio interference drastically changed the outcome, casting away parts of the film of what the earlier regime’s executives felt were darker and more serious tones. The end result was a theatrical cut featuring quips and unnecessary light-hearted tone moments that didn’t align with the larger context.

Since then, David Ayer has actively campaigned for his version of the Task Force X ensemble flick. Gunn, for his part – acknowledged the #ReleasetheAyercut movement in the initial days of hiring to lead the DCU brand. In addition, the Fury director has also been supportive of Gunn while also clashing with the DCU chief’s detractors.

Recently, both Ayer and Snyder offered their voice to amplify Blue Beetle‘s social media exposure, a marketing move that hints at DC Studios’ efforts to mend their relationship with the two directors.

In any case, the current priority remains on kicking off DCU’s Gods and Monsters and it starts with Superman: Legacy as much as Gunn states Blue Beetle is the first DCU character. The reception for Gunn’s reboot Superman project will likely pave the way for his future leadership decisions.
