Henry Cavill Loved To Play The Optimistic Superman In ‘Justice League’

Henry Cavill noted in the ‘Justice League: The Art of the Film’ book that he enjoyed playing a version of the character that fans are more familiar with – the one that signifies hope, optimism, and inspiration.

Henry Cavill played the role of Superman in three of DC Extended Universe films. A more jaded, angry, and disappointed Superman was what fans saw in DCEU’s Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It was a version that even Cavill believes didn’t work well. However, in Justice League, Superman has absorbed the qualities that fans of are familiar with. An optimistic, hopeful and inspiring Superman is what we see in Justice League, which released last month in November.

Expressing his joy in playing a more hopeful and optimistic Superman in Justice League, Henry Cavill in the Justice League: The Art of the Film book noted, “For me, [Justice League] in particular has really drawn closer to the Superman character who we know and recognize from the comic books. I’ve enjoyed playing that enormously, playing that character of hope and optimism, inspiration and example.”

This is not the first time that Cavill has expressed his love for the more positive Superman. During a press junket held in California before the release of Justice League, Henry Cavill had shed light on his character. He had said, “I feel like this is the natural progression from the end of ‘Man of Steel’ into what he is now. This is a rebirth of the character, to coin the D.C. comics franchise right now: It’s a refresh.” He adds, “This movie highlights the qualities of Superman that exist in the comic books. That’s something I’ve always been very keen to highlight in the character. This rebirth provided the opportunity for me to play those characteristics.”

We do not know as yet as to where Superman will go next. Justice League spelled the end of Superman’s three-film arc. From a jittery and reluctant hero, he went on to sacrifice himself, and then return with hope after finding a new purpose. The journey for the inspiring and optimistic Superman might continue in the DCEU space as that is what every Superman fan would want.

Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder. Post-production duties and additional photography was handled by Joss Whedon. Justice League star cast includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Ray Fisher, and Jeremy Iron.
