After seventeen long years and nine Wolverine movies, actor Hugh Jackman is finally done with portraying as the mutant Wolverine on the big screen. 2017 released Logan saw Jackman’s final appearance donning the metal claws. Jackman will next be seen in Jason Reitman-directed biographical drama The Front Runner.
While Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has been lobbying Jackman for a big return in a film featuring Deadpool and Wolverine together, it doesn’t seem the same is going to happen.
During a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment, while promoting Front Runner, when the former Wolverine actor was asked if Reitman helming the next Deadpool film could entice him to return to the franchise again, he said it will take more to convince him to make a return.
“Did Ryan Reynolds ask you to ask this question? Because it sounds like a trick question,” Jackman asked with a smile when he was asked about his comeback.
The 49-year-old actor said that he loves Reitman and Reynolds, but he still needs a more enticing reason to end his superhero retirement.
“I love Jason Reitman, and I actually — for all I say — you know I love Ryan Reynolds,” Jackman said. “But right now Ryan, sorry buddy, you’re gonna have to work harder than that.”
To recall, Jackman’s Wolverine made a cameo appearance in Deadpool 2’s post-credits tag, by way of repurposed footage taken from 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, in which Reynolds made his Wade Wilson debut as a muted version of the Merc with a Mouth.
Reynolds has always been very open about his wish to see Deadpool and Wolverine together in a movie.
During a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, when the actor was asked about a Deadpool / Wolverine crossover film, he said he keeps on trying to convince Jackman for the film whenever he meets him.
“I think convincing Hugh of that would be a near-impossible feat, but there’s no human being I love more than Hugh Jackman in that universe, and equally so as a friend,” Reynolds said. “He’s just the best. I already miss him as Logan, so I’m one of those guys that whenever I see him, I’m like, ‘Come on, man. Just one more. Come on. We’ll do it together. It’ll be fun. Come on! On three. Here we go, together. One, two, three, together,’ and it’s always just me saying it.”
Well, only time will tell if fans will ever get to see the two mutants together on the big screen.
Deadpool 2 is now available on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. The Front Runner arrives in theaters on November 21.
