Deadpool 3 will not be retconning Wolverine’s death from the 2019’s Logan movie, confirms Hugh Jackman. The threequel being produced under Marvel Studios’ wing is expected to be a buddy cop action adventure featuring the Merc with a mouth alongside the cigar-chomping X-Men member but it seems their journey takes place prior to the events of the dystopian future when Mutants are near extinct.
As much as the Marvel fandom was delighted to learn Jackman would reprise as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 – there remained great concern if his return would cast off the character’s beautiful death from Logan. Fortunately, Hugh Jackman has confirmed the story won’t interfere with Logan and in fact, has even gotten blessings to explore this arc from director James Mangold.
Jackman spoke about his interaction with the Logan director to inform him that Deadpool 3’s storyline would not impact Logan. “He was actually really cool about it,” Jackman told The Empire Film Podcast of Mangold’s reaction (via: The Direct). “I did tell him that it took place before our movie, so it wasn’t going to screw it up, like claws coming out of the grave. So, he was relieved by that, and he totally got it, that it was a really good idea.”
From the looks of it. Wolverine is in for a Back to the Future-Esque trip thanks to MCU once again dipping its feet with a time travel plot. In an earlier interview speaking on Sirius XM, the actor said, “all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines, now we can go back, because … it’s science.”
Ryan Reynolds has already teased Deadpool 3’s connection to Loki‘s TVA and Jackman’s discussion about time travel all the more indicates the duo facing challenges from the past and possibly a future that is yet to be uncovered. Recent rumors suggest Adamantium will be introduced in Captain America 4 and explored further in Thunderbolts. Though it’s unclear if Wolverine’s arrival to the main timeline could have consequences for the larger MCU. There have been hints of his stint in Earth-616 though his presence is a mystery.
Deadpool 3 will hit theaters on November 8, 2024.
