After 13 years since the release of The Incredible Hulk, Marvel Studios may have finally secured the rights to develop a standalone Hulk movie starring Mark Ruffalo. Moreover, it seems the feature film could partial be an adaptation of the critically acclaimed “World War Hulk” comic.
If the report from Geeks Worldwide is believed to be true, then Marvel Studios has reportedly green-lit production on a new “solo” Hulk film currently dubbed World War Hulk. It is rumored that the project is in active development with production scheduled for late 2022, possibly following up after the events of Disney Plus’s She-Hulk series.
A 2022 filming schedule for World War Hulk could be indicating a 2023 or 2024 release. But that could change since Hollywood is known to push back debut dates as seen with the recent release date changes for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder. The Marvels, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Have Marvel Studios secured back Hulk film rights from Universal Pictures?
A sequel to the 2008’s The Incredible Hulk has been long-awaited by the fandom. Unfortunately, due to Universal Pictures’ hold over the character’s film rights, Marvel Studios never got to produce a second installment centering over Hulk. However, going by the above report, it’s possible that Universal Pictures has lost the rights over Hulk and once again back in Marvel’s hand.
It must be noted that MCU head Kevin Feige did deliver a three-movie arc for The Hulk. Interestingly, the 3 part storyline starts with Thor: Ragnarok where fans get to see Bruce Banner and the green goliath as separate personalities and later see them in one form as Professor Hulk in Avengers: Endgame. Unfortunately, the Hulk’s potential still failed to see the top due to other characters such as Iron Man, Captain America & Black Widow taking the limelight.
The Hulk character currently stands alone as the only franchise without a sequel under Marvel Studios belt. For now, fans can set their eyes on the She-Hulk series with Mark Ruffalo set to reprise his green goliath role. Furthermore, Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters is MCU’s first step in exploring the Hulk franchise tree in phase four of the MCU.
