The production and filming work on the highly anticipated supernatural horror film, IT: Chapter 2 is currently going on in full swing. Actor Bill Skarsgard’s portrayal of the demonic clown Pennywise in the first IT film received a lot of appreciation from the critics as well as fans. He will soon be seen reprising his role in the sequel film.
During a recent interview with Collider, Bill Skarsgard opened up about how it felt getting back into the role especially after the first movie became a worldwide phenomenon.
“Yeah, it’s weird,” Skarsgard said. “It’s a bit strange ’cause it’s a very different thing now.’”
He revealed that portraying the character of Pennywise in the original IT film was not that difficult as nobody had any expectations of him and this helped him deliver a unique performance.
“The first time I did it, nobody knew what I would do with it, so it was just all of this expectation,” the 27-year-old actor said. “I didn’t know if it would work, or if people would respond to it. There was a lot of that worry going on about it. But that was also cool ‘cause I was just doing my thing and nobody knew what that was or could tell me how I should do it. I was like, “I’m gonna distance myself from the Tim Curry performance, and then come up with some weird stuff, myself.” I worked really closely with Andy [Muschietti], the director.”
Skarsgard added that stepping into the shoes of Pennywise once again for IT: Chapter 2 felt like re-adapting himself to the iconic role.
“This time around, because the movie became such a phenomenon, it’s almost like I’m re-adapting myself,” the Deadpool 2 actor said.
In the original IT film, Skarsgard shared the screen with a host of young teenager actors. But this time, he has a completely new set of actors to work with, in IT: Chapter 2. He expects that shooting with big stars like Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Bill Hader will be a very different experience for him.
“But off camera, I get to hang out with the entire adult cast now,” Skarsgard said. “It’s weird and it’s surreal because some of them are really big stars and they’re coming into your thing. They’re stepping into the thing that me and Andy and the kids did. They’re joining the band, in a way. They’re excited, and I just had a lot of fun hanging out with all of them. It’s going to be a very different shooting experience with all adults, for sure, but it will be fun. They’re all really cool and talented people, so I think they will bring a lot to the table.”
Talking more about IT: Chapter 2, the horror film will be based on the second part of Stephen King’s 1986 novel “IT”. It will pick up 27 years after the first film. The film’s story will once again bring The Loser’s Club, face to face with the demonic clown as he dares to kidnap and feast on the children living in Derry.
Andy Muschietti is directing IT: Chapter 2 from a script by Gary Dauberman. It is rumored that New Line Cinema will showcase IT Chapter Two and The Nun at the second annual ScareDiego preview night during the San Diego Comic-Con 2018 event.
IT Chapter Two is slated to hit theaters on Sept. 6, 2019.
