IT: Chapter 2 To Feature Famous ‘Ritual of Chüd’ Scene From Stephen King’s Novel

The 2017 released supernatural horror film, IT, was based on the first part of Stephen King’s 1986 novel of the same name and its sequel, IT: Chapter 2, will follow the last half of King’s novel. To give the film a more realistic feel, the filmmakers have decided to bring to life one of the book’s weirdest and most complex scenes, the famous ‘Ritual of Chüd.’

During a recent interview with Cinema Blend, IT: Chapter 2 screenwriter Gary Dauberman revealed that the sequel will attempt to realize the Ritual of Chüd.

The Ritual of Chüd is challenging, but it’s such an important component to the book that we had to address it,” Dauberman explained. “That stuff is difficult to balance, but because [director Andy Muschietti, producer Barbara Muschietti and I] worked with each other before, when I’m writing pages and all that stuff it becomes more of a conversation and less like, ‘Hey, here’s what I did.’ It’s sort of organic; it’s really kind of just chipping away at the stone and trying to find the most focused, accessible way into some of the more metaphysical aspects of that book.”

In the novel, the Losers Club defeated the Dancing Clown using the Ritual of Chüd. The Ritual of Chüd is basically a physical battle of the wills between the Losers’ and IT. It will see Pennywise and one of the Losers Club members each extend their tongues, overlap them, bite each other’s tongues and tell jokes until laughter defeats one of them.

Dauberman added that his longtime collaboration with Muschietti helped them understand each other’s perspectives. The two were able to divide and conquer, so to speak, pick up important elements from the novel and then take on the challenge to portray the same on the big screen.

I think that’s something that Andy gave a lot of thought about, which was great, because as I was kind of chugging along through the Adrian Melon stuff and sort of more the stuff that’s in the book that you kind of just want to see on screen,” Dauberman admitted. “I’m writing that stuff, and Andy would kind of go off and think about Chüd and how he wants to visually represent all that stuff. He just came up with some brilliant, brilliant stuff… It really is going to be amazing.”

We will get to see how the Ritual of Chüd is interpreted on the big screen when IT: Chapter 2 arrives in theaters on September 6, 2019. While filming continues in Ontario, Canada, the director and cast continue to tease the project with BTS photos.
