‘It’ll lose money’: Aquaman 2’s lack of trailer & promotions ahead of December release has fans doubting DC Studios’ confidence in James Wan’s DC film sequel, insider reveals why

With still no full-length trailer for Aquaman 2, questions have arisen regarding Warner Bros. Discovery’s confidence in releasing the follow-up to 2018’s Jason Momoa starrer DC Film, which became the first & only DCEU film to join the billion-dollar club. However, reports of multiple reshoots and disappointing test scores from early audience screening have signaled bad news for the sequel and the lack of promotions has not helped in changing the notion either.

First Blue Beetle and now Aquaman 2 – DCU fans are making a mockery out of Warner Bros. Discovery over the lack of marketing for James Wan’s Lost Kingdom. The second installment is at most 3 months away from its Christmas month release but so far, with the sneak-peak & behind-the-scene featurette combined, the studio has only released 30 seconds worth of footage to promote the project.

UPDATE: The Aquaman 2 trailer will arrive in a “matter of days” according to insider BSL

Sept 11 update: A teaser trailer has been released confirming the full-length trailer’s arrival.

In comparison, Netflix’s Rebel Moon which also has a December release has already kicked off the marketing with Snyder fans also getting a taste of what’s in store through a 3-minute plus trailer. Meanwhile, DC Studios have had nothing to offer except teasing glimpses through sizzle reels & life-size statues at exhibitions.

Sadly, it seems the absence of promos for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is a result of the film’s quality. As one insider reveals, “Because they know it’s bad, they know it’ll lose money, and they aren’t putting a marketing budget behind it at all.”

It’s no doubt been a grueling post-production, especially with James Wan completing its last round of extensive reshoot after receiving feedback from the DC Studios heads in July 2023. Their input also removed the Batman cameo shot by Michael Keaton & Ben Affleck.

While there was also a possibility for a potential delay – it was confirmed the DC Studios title would released as planned although WBD’s Dune Part Two was pushed to 2024. Though in fairness, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was originally set for December 2022 so another delay may further risk the film’s box office success.

On the bright side, DC has released merch for Aquaman and Mera with the Lost Kingdom branding. Halloween costumes of the Atlantean King are available for purchase too. So it can be taken as a sign that more marketing efforts could follow soon.

The fate of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman is also tied to the Lost Kingdom’s success and if it faces an abysmal response, DCEU’s Atlantean King may not have a place in James Gunn’s DCU. Let’s hope Wan’s underwater visual spectacle manages to prove us wrong when it releases on December 20, 2023.
