When James Gunn announced pre-production work on Superman: Legacy had begun – the director was also in South Korea for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s press tour. Even with a tightly packed busy schedule, the DC Studios CEO explained to a fan inquiring how he goes about working on both his MCU and DCU film simultaneously.
After months of speculations surrounding the casting process for Superman: Legacy, the project’s writer and director announced on the Man of Steel’s anniversary day that pre-production was officially underway. James Gunn has also sidelined Peacemaker season 2 as the reboot Supes feature is expected to roll cameras at some point in early 2024.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 inching closer to its May release – the cast namely Pom Klementieff, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan and Gunn have been participating in interviews in Seoul. Jennifer Holland is also in the press tour though Gunn had earlier insisted the Peacemaker actress was not part of the MCU threequel.
Gunn’s ability to juggle handling the creative responsibilities at DC Studios while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was deep in post-production did not go unnoticed by fans. In fact, the filmmaker was in the final stages of post, close to picture-lock while penning the Legacy script and also possibly working on Creature Commandos.

I left Legacy in the capable hands of our production designer, costume designer, casting directors and executive producers to be taken care of while I go on the promotional tour. I’ll start to see designs when I come back and I see auditions online from here.

When a fan quizzed the GOTG helmer how he handles Superman: Legacy while he’s busy with Vol. 3, Gunn responded, “I left Legacy in the capable hands of our production designer, costume designer, casting directors and executive producers to be taken care of while I go on the promotional tour. I’ll start to see designs when I come back and I see auditions online from here”
The helmer also clarified there won’t be a casting announcement for Clark Kent/Superman in the coming days or even next month so it’s likely the DC Studios presentation at CinemaCon would just reveal a working logo and concept art. It will be the first DCU live-action feature from Gods and Monsters though Creature Commandos animated series is expected to arrive first.
Superman: Legacy will fly into theaters on July 11, 2025.
