Earlier yesterday, EW broke a story that literally broke the internet. It was announced that a new Ghostbusters movie was greenlit by Sony and it is set to be directed and co-written by Jason Reitman. What’s more exciting is that the upcoming movie won’t be a reboot but rather a sequel to the original 1989 sequel movie, Ghostbusters II.
Sony Pictures has also released a new teaser for Ghostbuster 3 revealing that the film is set for a summer 2020 release. The original report confirmed that the project would begin shooting in a few months.
Now, a new listing from Production Weekly has revealed that the new Ghostbusters movie would begin filming in Late Spring or Summer of 2019. Furthermore, the listing also contains some details regarding the film’s plot and its characters.
According to the project notes, “The main characters will be 4 teens: 2 boys, 2 girls. A family moves back home to a small town where they learn more about who they are.”
The listings also say that the project has been operating under the working title ‘RUST CITY’.
It seems like there’s a possibility that the new characters could be the sons and daughters of the original characters from the 1989 movie. But there’s no word yet if Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson or Bill Murray would return to reprise their roles, even as a cameo for the upcoming movie.
Sony’s last attempt to revive the Ghostbusters franchise with an all-female reboot title in 2016 failed to win over its audience though it grossed over $229 million worldwide. Though the new franchise’ fate remains a mystery, the success of Reitman’s Ghostbusters 3 could encourage Sony to produce another all-female Ghostbusters movie.
While the new movie announcement does come as a surprise, it was already spoiled by Dan Aykroyd months ago. The Ghostbusters actor, while speaking on AXS TV’s The Big Interview with Dan Rather revealed that the third film was in the works.
“I think we have a story that’s going to work and it’s being written right now by really good filmmakers. I can’t say their names,” Aykroyd told Rather in the interview.
