Joe Manganiello Recalls His Meeting With Ben Affleck For The Batman Film

Actor Joe Manganiello, who made his first appearance as Slade Wilson a.k.a. Deathstroke in one of the Justice League post-credits scene has revealed that he was originally attached to play Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s The Batman movie. But now that War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves is directing The Batman film instead of Ben Affleck and is heading with a new script, it remains unclear how or if Manganiello’s character will be utilized in the standalone film.

During an interview with Chris Hardwick on the ID10T podcast, Manganiello revealed that he had previously met with Ben Affleck for a possible appearance in The Batman.

When something came around, like when I met with Ben Affleck about Batman, and he told me that the meeting we were having was for Deathstroke. This is a real opportunity to figure out who this guy is on the inside. Like what he’s battling with. The best quote-unquote, I hate calling them this, ya know I don’t mind, but I you know calling them a villain is understanding where they’re coming from.”

Manganiello also talked about what he liked about his character Deathstroke.

There are villains who are the people who are opposing them but from the inside, this is a person who is struggling with all types of things,” the actor added. “I think it’s really interesting to tell that kind of a story and tell the truth emotionally of a story like that when you’re talking about a man who lost an eye, was betrayed, lost a son. These different types of aspects.”

The actor said that when Affleck was attached to The Batman film, he wanted to set Deathstroke as the main villain in the stand-alone Batman movie. But now as Affleck’s replacement Reeves is starting from scratch, it might be that fans will see an entirely new villain taking the center stage in The Batman.

Deathstroke is getting his own solo outing from The Raid director Gareth Evans. No more details about the film have been revealed yet.
