It seems director Todd Phillips’ standalone Joker movie has finally begun filming in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. The first set pictures showcasing actor Joaquin Phoenix has arrived courtesy, Just Jared. The pictures show the 43-year-old actor laughing and honking a clown’s nose.

Director Todd Phillips also recently took to Instagram to share a picture of Phoenix in character. The picture in question shows the actor wearing a green jacket and sporting long hair, but sans the Joker’s iconic clown makeup and green locks. Phillips captioned the picture as “Arthur.” Well, the caption confirms that ongoing rumors that the character’s real name is Arthur Fleck.
Phoenix is playing the role of a clown whose failure as an artist leads him to become Gotham City’s Clown Prince of Crime. The movie has been described as an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.”
Based in the ’80s, the Joker movie is set outside of the DC Extended Universe series of films. It is expected to be darker and more experimental in tone as compared to previous DC comic book films. Notably, there’s another Joker movie in the works starring Jared Leto, who played the character in 2016’s Suicide Squad. Leto is also expected to reprise the role of Joker in three upcoming DC films namely Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens and a Harley Quinn stand-alone movie.
Some of the other actors who will feature alongside Phoenix in the Joker movie include Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, Atlanta and Deadpool 2 fame actor Zazie Beetz. The film is eyeing an R-rating as it will showcase the real-life world of stand-up comedians who also perform in strip clubs.
Director Todd Phillips has co-written the film’s script with Scott Silver (8 Mile). Emma Tillinger Koskoff will produce Joker, with Richard Baratta executive producing.
The Joker movie is set to arrive in theaters on October 4, 2019.
