‘Justice League’: J.K. Simmons Talks Playing Commissioner Gordon

J.K. Simmons will next be seen enacting the role of the Gotham City Police Commissioner Jim Gordon in DCEU’s most ambitious upcoming superhero film Justice League.

J.K. Simmons played the role of J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. He will now play a tough City Police Commissioner in DC’s upcoming film. In a recent interview with ET, Simmons said that he wants to bring a sort of ruggedness to the character he will be portraying. Talking about his daunting experience meeting up with director Zack Snyder for the first time, Simmons said, “I don’t know anything about show business. My agent called and said, ‘Zack Snyder wants to meet with you,’ and I was like, ‘Awesome. Who’s that?’ And he was like, ‘He’s like one of the biggest directors.’ Not even like, ‘This is what it’s about,’ just, ‘Go meet.'”

Simmons thought of Snyder as a very friendly person and after a few minutes into the meeting, Snyder asked with a quizzical look, “You have no idea why you’re here, do you? ‘Commissioner Gordon. I want you to play Commissioner Gordon.” Though Simmons was excited about the offer, he also felt intimidated by the iconic nature of the character and the actors who had previously portrayed him. Gary Oldman played Gordon in the entire Dark Knight trilogy by director Christopher Nolan.

Talking about his role in Justice League, Simmons further said, “It was great to get my feet wet in the first [Justice League], we say, hoping there will be more. That’s the plan.”

Expressing his vision for Gordon’s character development in Justice League installment and beyond, the J.K. Simmons star says that he wants to bring the rough and tough grit that he is known for. “I think as we delve further into Jim Gordon, and the planned sequel, what I’m hoping to find is some of his sort of tough guy, badass [qualities],” Simmons opined. Speaking about the research that he did for the character, J.K. Simmons added, “There have been so many incarnations of him, obviously in print and also on screen, and I think one of the aspects that I found the most interesting about him as I did my research, with my comic book nerd friends mostly, was that [he is] a tough guy.”

Jim Gordon, in many comic storylines, and even in most animated Batman films, served first in the U.S. Marine Corps. It was only later that he was signed on to the Gotham City PD.

Justice League is all set to hit the theater on November 17, and stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Momoa as Aquaman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jason Amber Heard as Mera, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, J.K. Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, and Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta.
