Justice League, the fifth installment in Warner Bros.’ newly formed DC Extended Universe is the highest-grossing DC movie ever to hit the theaters in China. The film has managed to gross $98.6 million at the box office.
Warner Bros. sure have reason enough to cheer. Even though their latest release Justice League opened up to a lot of criticism and disappointing performance at the domestic box office, the film is gearing its way to the top overseas, especially in China.
This sequel to Zack Snyder’s 2016 release movie, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice stands at $98.6M in China, according to Comic Book. With this, Justice League’s overseas total rose to $371.8M after collecting $36.8M in its third weekend. The global total of the film as of today is at $569.2M.
In spite of the negative reviews, Justice League in China has gone on to lead Wonder Woman ($90.5 million gross) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($95.7 million gross) in only three weeks.
Though the numbers at the domestic box office show no sign of improvement, Justice League’s international stint might help Warner Bros. to pass the $5 billion mark at the worldwide box office this year. Thanks to a very successful week at the global box office, the DC studio has crossed a huge hurdle by passing the $3B mark.
Warner Bros. have undoubtedly had a huge weekend in China. However, it is their rival company Disney that led the box office. Disney/Pixar’s latest adventure outing Coco earned $69.6M overseas, thereby taking its international total to $172.3M. Along with its domestic numbers, Coco’s global figure stands at $281M since its release on 27 October.
Both Justice League and Coco can continue to rake the China box office until the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on December 15.
