Costume designer Michael Wilkinson, the man responsible behind for the aesthetic costumes of all superheroes in Justice League, said that while researching for the costume of The Flash, he looked at speed suits, clothes that Olympic athletes wore while running, and also took into account what people wore when they wanted to run very fast.
Michael Wilkinson is one of the most successful and sought after costume designers. His movie career began when filmmaker Zach Snyder paired with him to work on a series of films which included Watchmen and Sucker Punch before plunging into working on the costumes of other DC superheroes. Wilkinson designed the costumes for Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and the most recent being Justice League, to be released next month.
In an interview with News Corp Australia, Wilkinson spoke at length about the details that were involved in designing the suit of The Flash, played by Ezra Miller. Wilkinson said that he along with this team had to do a lot of research, and even had to check on materials that could tolerate heat and electricity.
“When we did research for The Flash we definitely looked at speed suits, Olympic athletes, what people were wearing when they needed to move super-fast, the fastest people of Earth what they were wearing as well as looking into materials that would withstand electricity, withstand high heats, so we did all sorts of eclectic research,” said Wilkinson.
Fans must also take note that the suit that we have come across in Justice League teasers and trailers is the first version that was put together by Barry Allen himself. The film will introduce a new suit for the superhero created by Bruce Wayne.
Michael Wilkinson has a huge responsibility on his shoulders considering that his next generation costume reinvention of the most popular superheroes be it, Batman, Superman or Wonder Woman will be scrutinized by the entire world when Justice League hits the theaters in November this year.
“It’s such a pleasure to be able to go into so much detail about these characters who surely warrant lots of attention on every last square inch of them so I have been able to pour a lot of love and respect into these guys from their neck lines right down into their souls of their shoes,” added Wilkinson talking about the costumes of Justice League for which he has been working for more than a year.
Justice League will be released on November 17, 2017. The film stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Amber Heard as Mera, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, and Diane Lane as Martha Kent.
