Kate Beckinsale Reveals Why She Didn’t Regret Not Playing Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot’s portrayal of Amazonian princess Diana aka Wonder Woman has been very well received by fans as well as critics. Well, there was a time when another actress almost stepped into the role. It was none other than the Underworld franchise actress Kate Beckinsale.

During a recent interview with Variety, Beckinsale revealed that the reports of her being cast as Princess Diana at one point of time were indeed true. However, she went on to praise Gadot’s performance in the Wonder Woman film.

Yes, there was a period of time, a long time ago, when [producer] Joel Silver was involved with it,” the 45-year-old actress said. “But it worked out beautifully. That was a wonderful film that Gal [Gadot] did.”

When asked if she regrets not getting a chance to play that character, Beckinsale said she has no regrets about not signing on to play Wonder Woman as the film would have been a big disaster if made on the basis of the script that she was offered.

No,” the Farming actress said. “It would have been a terrible movie based on the script that I read.”

Beckinsale has portrayed the character of werewolf hunter Selene in five Underworld franchise movies until now including 2003’s Underworld, 2006’s Underworld: Evolution, 2009’s Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, 2012’s Underworld: Awakening and 2016’s Underworld: Blood Wars.

In the interview, the actress revealed that she is not going to do Underworld franchise films anymore as she has spent enough time playing Selene.

I wouldn’t return,” Beckinsale said. “I’ve done plenty of those.”

She will next be seen in the low-budget British drama film, Farming, portraying a working-class woman whose Nigerian-born foster child eventually becomes the feared leader of a white skinhead gang. The film has been written and directed by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje from a screenplay based on his autobiographical story of the same name.
