Kong: Skull Island Director Pitched Superman: Red Son Movie, Got Turned Down

Earlier in March, news broke that Warner Bros. had finally approached a director to helm the Superman sequel. It was revealed that Matthew Vaughn was the studio’s top choice although WB still hadn’t reached the stages of signing a deal.  However, it looks like another director also had an interest in directing a Man of Steel film.

Recently, Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts revealed that he had pitched a Superman story to Warner Bros. However, it doesn’t look like the director was planning on helming the sequel instead directing a different a film that would take place in an alternate universe.

During a Twitter conversation with writer Mark Millar, Vogt-Roberts revealed that he had pitched the DC Comics’ ‘Superman: Red Son’ story adaptation for the big screen. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. shot down his pitch.

Surprisingly, Superman: Red Son writer Mark Millar also jumped in to add that Warner Bros. had already shown interest in the idea of an adaptation the comics for a feature film. Den of Geek also spoke to Millar and confirmed that he had no part in it.

Since then, the tweets have already spiraled out of control. Vogt-Robert also put out another tweet in an attempt to damage control. The director wrote that he has “no idea” if Warner Bros. is in the process of developing a Red Son based film.

He added that the Red Son story idea was his pitch to the studio and not the other way around. Fans can check out the list of tweets below in order to get a grip of the story.

Going by the entire conversation, it looks like it was a mere coincidence that Vogt-Robert had pitched a Red Son story while Warner Bros. was already considering its possibility. For now, fans would have to wait to get a clear picture on whether WB is planning on making a Superman movie which features the superhero as a citizen of the Soviet Union.
