Legendary Entertainment has joined hands with Japanese animation studio Sunrise to make a live-action Gundam movie. Sunrise President & CEO Yasuo Miyakawa announced the news at the Anime Expo 2018 event which is currently taking place in Los Angeles.
The Sunrise animation studio played a short video clip during the panel to reveal that it is co-producing the live-action Gundam movie with Legendary. Nothing much was announced about the film, except that Pacific Rim Uprising producer Cale Boyter will work with the Sunrise creative team on behalf of Legendary Entertainment.
The popular anime series Gundam that focuses on giant robots and suits was first launched in 1979. During the past 40 years, the massively popular series has been adapted into a number of animated films, televised anime, manga, video games, plastic models, toys, and books which have propelled the value of the overall franchise into billions.
The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century era when humanity’s growing population forced people to immigrate to space colonies. The people living in the colonies eventually launch a war against the people living on Earth to gain independence. Battles are fought by piloting robots known as mobile suits.
Notably, it will not be the first time that Gundam will appear in a live-action movie. Earlier this year, a Gundam had a brief appearance in Steven Spielberg’s VR-focused film, Ready Player One. While no story details about the Gundam live action film is currently available, it’s possible that the film will draw inspiration from the original anime.
In related news, Legendary Entertainment has Dwayne Johnson’s action-thriller Skyscraper next in line for release. The film is set to roll out in theatres on July 13. The studio is also in post-production on Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Detective Pikachu which stars Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith.
