Taylor Swift‘s Eras Tour concert film is looking at a massive box office opening that could topple even the likes of WBD’s Barbie movie’s weekend earnings. The singer’s potential blockbuster feature has already defeated MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home with a record-breaking ticket pre-sale of $26 million but it’s far from being the only feat going by early predictions.
Taylor Swift’s upcoming concert movie is likely to be recorded as a historic box office feat, particularly for landing an October 14 release date. Hollywood features released in the month of October have failed to hit the $100M debut threshold so far, with only the R-rated Joker movie coming close at a $96 million three-day earning estimate. But theater exhibitor’s opening prediction for Swift’s pic indicates it would sore past higher.
As THR reports, sources from the theater exhibition industry believe Eras Tour would debut at $100 million and are also not eliminating the possibility of a $150M + grossing domestically. So far, Barbie is the only blockbuster in 2023 to earn $150M+ on the opening weekend. If the prediction pans out, some fans point out it would easily dominate the BO weekend record of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash and Blue Beetle.
It’s certainly good news for theater exhibitors especially since the WGA & Actors Strike has pushed off blockbusters like Dune Part Two & comic book movies like Sony’s Kraven the Hunter which attracts the younger crowd. Speaking of, union artists currently protesting against AMPTP have also praised Taylor Swift for playing a role in casting aside the Hollywood studio system to independently distribute the movie via a collaboration with AMC Theaters.

🚨 According to box office analysts, Taylor Swift’s "The Eras Tour" concert film is aiming to earn $150M+ in its opening weekend at the domestic box office.
It would mark the biggest opening weekend of the year, surpassing "Barbie".

the fact that it’s not being released internationally and it’s only AMC theater chains and it’s doing THESE numbers is actually insane https://t.co/vixRNcFWJV

Phenomenal. Taylor Swift just announced The Eras Tour Movie yesterday, and she’s already breaking advanced ticket sales records. AMC Theaters broke their record for most single-day ticket sales, at $26 million in just three hours. pic.twitter.com/7Oadk12pmX

Puck News also reported Universal Pictures were displeased by the move since studios did not receive a “heads-up”. But at a time when artists are being encouraged to participate in independent studio projects not part of the AMPTP (like A24) – Swift’s decision is being hailed for sending a clear message that “the dynamics of cinema distribution” could change if major studios fail to prioritize artists’ values.
A worldwide release could arguably see the weekend earnings soaring past higher than $200M but it is currently set for an exclusive release in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Eras Tour concert pic is expected to land an international release as well but there has been no announcement as of this writing. It is possible for, Swift’s team might likely be approached by a major studio for the international territory distribution.
With Jason Blum also moving up The Exorcist: Believer‘s release date to avoid competing with Taylor Swift’s pic, the concert flick faces no huge competition at least until Martin Scorsese‘s Killers of the Flower Moon lands in theaters. The pre-ticket sales in Cinépolis Mexico have also witnessed an overwhelming response, beating the record held by Avengers: Infinity War.
If this was opening globally…..it would dethrone Barbie 💀 https://t.co/car9etkvcB
