‘looks like Henry Cavill’: David Corenswet’s casting in Superman: Legacy gets DCU fans approval but Man of Steel stans are irked, sad reactions over Emma Mackey losing Lois Lane role to Rachel Brosnahan

DCU’s Gods and Monsters has found its Superman in David Corenswet but the internet is more surprised over The Politician star’s resemblance with Henry Cavill. James Gunn has confirmed the casting for Superman: Legacy which also includes Rachel Brosnahan hired to play Lois Lane but Emma Mackey supporters are disappointed since the Sex Education actor was on the final shortlist during the screen test and was apparently a close call.

An audition for Superman: Legacy that began as early as April whilst James Gunn was also simultaneously on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 press tour has finally concluded. With WBD CEO David Zaslav also signing off on the new Superman – the DC Studios CEO addressed THR‘s report on David Corenswet taking over the Man of Steel role from Superman and Rachel Brosnahan from Amy Adams on Twitter. “Accurate! (They are not only both incredible actors, but also wonderful people).”

Since the start of the screen test, David Corenswet’s casting as Superman was approved by the masses on social media for his charming Clark Kent persona. But many have also pointed out Corenswet looks like Henry Cavill or a rather younger-looking version of Zack Snyder’s Justice League star.

It, unfortunately, has also received criticism for casting a Cavill lookalike rather than offering a continuation of the Snydeverse character after his faceless cameo in The Flash. But a few Superman fans have pushed back to state Henry also shared similarities to Christopher Reeves, Tom Welling and Brandon Routh – the previous live-action iterations of the Man of Steel.

A few fans felt Tom Brittney, who also auditioned for Superman: Legacy, looked more similar to Henry Cavill than Corenswet. Nonetheless, it’s fair to say both actors have the looks to portray DC’s red-caped superhero. Moreover, Above the Line‘s Jeff Sneider reports that Gunn himself had “no problem with that resemblance”.

Meanwhile, a small voice of criticism rose over casting 32-year-old Rachel Brosnahan as the Daily Planet reporter and romantic interest of Clark Kent as the 29-year-old Corenswet is younger than the actress. But that argument was shut down with a counterpoint that Amy Adams was 8 years older than Cavill.

There appears to be dismay over Emma Mackey losing the Lois Lane role but the actress’ fanbase is choosing to see the bright side of her career with an upcoming role in the anticipated Barbie. On the topic of Rachel, DCU stans are already comparing her to the comic adaptations calling her the “greatest Lois Lane casting ever”. Furthermore, when paired beside Corenswet – many noted the two look like the 1930s Action Comics era iteration.

The height difference between Corenswet and Brosnahan has led to some curious reactions from Superman fans. The Superman star is 6 feet 4 inches while is 5 feet 3 inches, a drastic difference. Similarly, Cavill is also 6 feet and 1 inch while Adams was 5 feet and 4 inches.

With the casting for Superman and Lois Lane out of the way – the next round of auditions for Legacy is expected to screen test actors for Lex Luthor, The Authority characters and Jimmy Olsen to name a few. There were rumors that Supes nemesis – Brainiac would be the threat in DCU’s first film though it remains to be seen and may be addressed by the end of the casting process.

Superman: Legacy will fly into theaters on July 11, 2025.
