Disney’s Rachel Zegler starring Snow White movie faces competition from another adaptation based on the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tale. The conservative media company, Daily Wire is developing a live-action project featuring right-wing Youtube political commentary Brett Cooper and fans of the Disney princess are already branding it the MAGA version of Snow White.
What started with a backlash from conservatives towards Disney’s liberal take on Snow White has now resulted in right-wing media developing its own take on the princess. A brief teaser has been released offering the first look at Brett Cooper donning the iconic royal blue dress and a shot of the Apple, referencing the poisoned fruit given to her by the Witch. Daily Wire’s co-founder Jeremy Boreing has called it (via: THR) their “own adaptation of an ancient fairy tale.”
To clarify, Daily Wire’s adaptation, “Snow White and the Evil Queen” will not be able to feature the Seven Dwarfs or elements that were not part of Grimm’s source material. The mouse house’s version contains instances rewritten from the classic German fairy tale so it does not fall under the public domain. So any material resembling the 1937 film would be subject to copyright infringement.
While some support the idea of a conservative media company developing its own take on the character according to their needs, a few have pointed out the hypocrisy of right-wing commentators who have criticized movies like The Little Mermaid as having political agendas from the liberal media. It’s clear the recent development is directly correlated to the controversy concerning Rachel Zegler’s comment. The actress has gone on record to state her despise for Disney’s original adaptation, “a guy who literally stalks her. Weird, weird.” addressing the Prince Charming element. Moreover, The Hunger Games star also revealed the feature would center over her journey of “becoming the leader” rather than show Snow White “dreaming about true love.”
Meanwhile, the last round of test screening for Disney’s Snow White was met with pleasant responses. Zegler and Gal Gadot and Andrew Burnap’s performances reportedly received high scores during the screening. Moreover, the replacement of Dwarves with the bandits has also been praised.
Zegler and the rest of the cast & crew attached to the project have not reacted to the news as of this writing. The actress has been unable to address any queries regarding the movie due to the SAG-AFTRA strike though it will be interesting to see how Disney would respond to the competition.
