Earlier in January, it was confirmed that Sony and Mattel’s upcoming Masters of the Universe project was on track with its development. Writer Art Marcum and Matt Holloway were revealed to be in final talks to pen a new draft for the movie which will be directed by Aaron and Adam Nee.
Now it looks like the studio has already scheduled a production start date for Masters of the Universe. According to Film Magazine Production Weekly’s latest listing, the movie will begin principal photography on July 15 in Prague. It also states that filming is scheduled to wrap on October 18.
If the above information is true then Sony would soon likely announce a change in the project’s release date. At the moment, Masters of the Universe is still scheduled to release on December 20.
Sony still hoped to release the movie on its assigned release date even after David S. Goyer stepped away from the director’s chair. But that seems unlikely now if the movie’s production itself won’t be wrapping until mid-October. Prior to this, the studio still has to give the green light for the new draft which would be written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.
A film of this magnitude would surely require more time in getting its event production up and running. So from the looks of it, Masters of the Universe might be looking at a possible early 2020 release. but nothing is certain at the moment.
The previous draft for Masters of the Universe was penned by David S. Goyer. For some time, he was also attached to direct the project but he currently remains just as an executive producer.
Masters of the Universe is based on Mattel’s popular toy line launched in 1982. It received much popularity thanks to its animated TV series that ran from 1983 to 1985 as well as the 1987 movie starring Dolph Lundgren film.
