As the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Phase 3 is nearing the end, James Gunn has teased a brand new narrative coming up in Phase 4 after Avengers 4.
While fans are excitedly awaiting the turn of events likely to take place towards the end of Phase 3, few are already speculating about what remains ahead for the superhero series.
Rumors were abuzz that both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 will lead to a closure – a finale to a narrative that began with Iron Man and includes a total of 22 films. The number 22 also includes Black Panther, and Ant-Man and the Wasp which are set to be released in 2018 as well as Captain Marvel coming up in the year 2019. When fans began questioning whether this means the end of MCU, James Gunn replied in the negative saying that will fall into the “Whatever Happens Next” phase of Marvel’s grand plan.
James Gunn’s statement throws light on the thought process at Marvel Studios. The Phase one to three of MCU focused on the rise of Thanos and his quest for the Infinity Stones. This part has played a distinct role in multiple Marvel movies but is most likely to end with Avengers 4. Josh Brolin, we know will portray the Mad Titan in Avengers: Infinity War, but do not know as yet if the fight against his forces will extend into Avengers 4.
Going by Gunn’s tweet, it is clear that this will not be the end of MCU, but a beginning of a new story. In August 2017, Gunn had mentioned that the third installment of the cosmic series will open up stories that will set-up the next 10-20 years worth of Marvel movies. As of now, we cannot predict about Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 until we get to watch Avengers 4, which is likely to hit the theaters on May 3, 2019.
