Mixed Reactions Over Robin’s Potrayal In ‘Titans’ Trailer, Geoff Johns Responds

DC has rolled out the first trailer of Titans, the new live-action adaptation of the popular comic and animated TV show Teen Titans, which is exclusively being made for its upcoming streaming service, DC Universe. The trailer reveals an unexpected darker side of Dick Grayson, the erstwhile Robin, who is always considered as one of Batman’s most trusted allies.

The one thing about the trailer that has grabbed everyone’s attention is Robin (Brenton Thwaites) growling “F*** Batman” as he takes on a group of criminals who are asking for his former partner in crime, Batman.

The new Titans trailer showcases a haunted girl called Raven (Teagan Croft) who reaches out to detective Dick Grayson for help. He seems to be back and forth with Raven amid a dream-like flashback of his parents from the time they were together as the ‘Flying Grayson’. Fans of Dick Grayson would know that his backstory is vital to his narrative in the series.

There are also a couple shots of Beast Boy (Ryan Potter) and Starfire (Anna Diop) in action.

Fans had a mixed reaction to the newly released Titans trailer. While some of them loved Brenton Thwaites’ portrayal of Dick Grayson, others didn’t seem to like the trailer at all. You can check out their reaction to the trailer as well as “Robin’s F*** Batman” line below.

Polygon recently caught up with former DC Entertainment head and Titans executive producer Geoff Johns at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con 2018 event. When Johns was asked to comment on the “F**k Batman” line, he said there’s a good reason for the line.

The trailer shows a piece of the tone of the show — the show’s not all that,” Johns said. “But it does make you go, ‘Why is he saying [F**k Batman?]’ If you look at when Robin first left Batman in the comics, there was a lot of uneasiness and him being lost. Titans is really a series about these different characters that are all lost in their lives; just like the greatest comic book Titans run ever, by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, it’s about all these lost characters find one another. And they’re all struggling with something, and Robin is clearly struggling with his past with Batman.”

Johns added that fans will learn a lot more about it and also the reason behind his grittiness when they watch DC’s Titans series.

Titans will debut on DC Universe sometime later this year.
