May Calamawy’s Layla from Moon Knight continues to be the talk of the town, particularly, her transformation into Scarlet scarab in the Disney Plus finale has struck a chord for MCU fans. So it’s only fair the 35-year-old offered a deeper look into the work that went in to bring her character alive. And in more bonus breadcrumbs from the acclaimed Oscar Isaac starring show, two new alternate concept art of Khonshu have surfaced.
Moon Knight was largely centered on Isaac’s Marc Spector/Steven Grant and their face-off against Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) to stop him from unleashing Ammit. But in midst of this world-rescue mission, Layla introduced as Marc’s wife is not the average supporting female character but rather a powerhouse that could take on enemies all by herself, with or without Taweret’s suit. In fact, a hint at her backstory also reveals she’s dabbled in the criminal underworld of Madripoor. To build an impactful role such as hers certainly requires a lot of behind-the-scenes groundwork.
As Calamawy describes, “It took a village to raise a Layla” and the below training montage is proof it did. From the looks of it, Layla could give Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter a run for her money with her Winter Soldier-esque knife combat.

Calamawy recently spoke on her stunt training routine for Layla role stating, “We trained for two months, the stunt training was two hours a day, and then I worked with my personal trainer, which was an additional hour-and-a-half. It was three-and-a-half hours a day, five days a week, for two months.”
The Moon Knight star has also expressed her interest to reprise Scarlet Scarab, potentially alongside other Marvel women such as Agatha. She also shared her love for Doctor Strange and Blade. It will be interesting to see which way Marvel goes with Layla’s arc. There’s no doubt series director Mohamed Diab will offer his blessing to see her role live on.
Speaking of behind-the-scenes, an alternate design of Khonshu has been released by Jackson Sze, Visual Development Supervisor at Marvel Studios. One artwork shows an eerie-looking Moon-god in his comic accurate white suit while the other is more terrifying. Readers can check it out below.
