Mortal Kombat movie producer confirms Johnny Cage is not replaced, gets emotional over fan reactions to trailer

The much anticipated release of The Mortal Kombat trailer brought with it quite an amount of early reveals, brutalities (thank you Red Band trailer) and spotlight on characters like Sub-Zero & Scorpion. So far, fan reactions have ultimately been positive with much praise towards the team behind the R-Rated feature. And now, The trailer’s appraisal has got Mortal Kombat producer emotional enough to address fans.

The wait for a live-action Mortal Kombat has been long overdue ever since the first film was released in 1995. The upcoming reboot movie received much hype after Warner Bros. roped in James Wan to produce it along with Todd Garner. And sure enough, the team’s hard work behind-the-scenes seems to have paid off going by fan reactions and Garner is quite excited with “Tears of Joy”.

Mortal Kombat producer asks fan who to cast as Johnny Cage

The Mortal Kombat producer took to Twitter to share his thoughts after seeing the overwhelming response towards the R-rated trailer. The producer stated that seeing the reactions was quite an emotional moment that moved him to tears. Garner shared that during the production of Mortal Kombat, the work had put him away from his family for months but it was all worth it, after watching fans rejoice. You can check out his tweet below.

Many were happy to see the producer’s tweet and shared similar thoughts but the responses towards the tweet were also filled with questions regarding Johnny Cage’s disappearance from the trailer. But it seems like the character has been excluded from the movie, altogether. Fans were disappointed to learn of his exclusion and moreover, were quizzed by the inclusion of a newly written character played by Lewis Tan. Though Garner didn’t reveal a lot, the producer assured that Johnny Cage has not been replaced.

Johnny Cage has not been replaced! Possible for Mortal Kombat 2?

Garner added that the character has huge prominence and deserves a bigger spot in the Mortal Kombat Universe. Perhaps, we may see the fan-favorite character face-off Goro in a sequel? In any case,  the return of the franchise’s other iconic characters like Sonya Blade does suggest the possibility of Cage’s return.

Mortal Kombat will hit theaters on April 16. On release, the R-rated feature film will also be available on HBO Max for streaming. Stay tuned for more updates.
