Neil Gaiman weighs in on possibility of The Sandman season 2 from Netflix

The Sandman season 1’s successful adaptation of Dream (Tom Sturridge), Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park) and Despair (Donna Preston) out of the seven siblings of The Endless has fans demanding Netflix to greenlight The Sandman season 2 to further explore the dark fantasy series. Creator Neil Gaiman has offered his candid thoughts on the possibility of a follow-up announcement.

The Sandman season 1 was released barely a fortnight ago, on August 5 and so far, the series holds the first spot on Netflix’s most-watched TV show in the US and globally. The first eleven chapters have particularly impressed comic fans for adapting some interactions from the source material word for word. With long-time Sandman aficionados convinced that the live-action series lies in the good hands of David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg, demand for season 2 is on the rise.

The Sandman fans were recently treated with a special bonus episode that introduced a new character from Morpheus’ past, Calliope as well as details regarding their son, Orpheus. The 1-hour treat has only left fans wanting more but Gaiman thinks there’s currently no word on “future seasons”. The network is looking at the series’ reach for the first month of premiere before getting ahead. Readers can check out his response below.

While The Sandman is a DC Universe property, the decision for a follow-up lies in Netflix’s hands due to the network’s deal with Warner Bros. One fan even quizzed Gaiman over why HBO (owned by Warner Bros.) didn’t pick up the series but apparently, WBD’s network didn’t even bid for it.

The Sandman series has laid the groundwork for introducing more entities like Destruction. The fourth eldest of the Endless was namedropped as The Prodigal during Morpheus’ conversation with Death in episode 6. Furthermore, there’s more audience hoping to see the backstory of Morpheus as Kai’ckul and his love affair with Nada in season 2. In addition, there were already calls for a Johanna Constantine (Jenna Coleman) spin-off so there’s no doubt Netflix holds a strong franchise under its belt.
