Netflix has finally announced the cast members for its upcoming fantasy-based series The Witcher. The show is based on the series of novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, which also serves as the basis for the popular video games of the same name.
The show makers have already roped in Superman star Henry Cavill for the role of the series’ protagonist Geralt of Rivia. Cavill will be donning a beard and graying locks for the role. The announcement was made by Netflix NX on the Netflix Twitter account.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, joining Cavill are Freya Allan (The War of the Worlds, Into the Badlands) and Anya Chalotra (The ABC Murders, Wanderlust) who will portray the characters of Ciri and Yennefer, respectively. Ciri and Yennefer are two of the most important characters in The Witcher universe. The princess of Cintra, Ciri, is the adopted daughter of Geralt of Rivia. Yennefer is a sorceress who is a mother figure to Ciri and Geralt’s main love interest.
The Witcher also stars Jodhi May as Queen Calanthe, Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson as Eist, Adam Levy as Mousesack, MyAnna Buring as Tissaia, leader of the magical academy at Aretuza, Millie Brady as Princess Renfri and Mimi Ndiweni and Therica Wilson-Read as novice sorcerers.
“The Witcher Geralt, a mutated monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts,” the show’s tagline reads.
The Witcher season one will comprise of eight episodes. Alik Sakharov will be directing four episodes, while Charlotte Brandstrom and Alex Garcia Lopez will each direct two episodes. Daredevil and The Defenders producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich will act as showrunner and will executive produce alongside Sakharov.
The Witcher Netflix series has no release date attached yet. With production scheduled to start soon, the show is expected to air in 2020.
