Netflix’s ambitious big-budgeted James Bond-style feature film, ‘The Gray Man’ starring Ryan Gosling & Chris Evans just got a whole lot better with Indian actor Dhanush joining the star-studded cast. The film touted as one of the streaming service’s largest budget so far, already had fans hyped with Avengers: Endgame director duo Joe and Anthony Russo helming the project. But certainly, Netflix has once again proven that it still hasn’t used all its tricks up its sleeve to meet the audience’s expectations.
The Gray Man has been in development for quite some time at Sony and Netflix was quick to pounce on the project & acquire it this past Summer. So far, the studio has brought on two major A-list talent for the project with a budget upward of $200 million. But the recent round of announcement reported by Deadline reveals other prominent stars such as South Indian star Dhanush, Iron Fist star Jessica Henwick, Wagner Moura & Julia Butters are also getting on board the Russos’ directed Espionage thriller.
The Gray Man will be Netflix’s first big-budget film setting off a franchise
Ana de Armas was also announced to be cast in the project along with Gosling and Evans.
The Gray Man is based on the debut novel by Mark Greaney and centers on a freelance assassin and former CIA operative Court Gentry. The Espionage Bond thriller will follow Gentry played by Gosling whose hunted across the world by Lloyd Hansen played by Evans, a former cohort at the CIA. The movie will be based on the first installment of the novel series.
Dhanush has made quite a name in the Indian film industry hailing from the south cinema world. The actor is well known for his recent roles in movies such as Asuran and Vada Chennai. Moreover, the star has also made his mark in Bollywood – in the film, Raanjhanaa.
Can Indian star Dhanush woe fans in India for The Gray Man to become a blockbuster?
It is currently unknown how prominent Dhanush’s character will be in this Netflix project. The studio is reportedly planning to create a James Bond-style franchise. However, with an ambitious budget and star list, Netflix could win over the Asian market.
Earlier this year, the film Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth gained big popularity in India on its release. The film produced by the Russos made an impact on Indian fans after the project filmed some of its major sequences in Ahmadabad, India and also featured Bollywood actors like Randeep Hooda and Pankaj Tripathi. Surprisingly, it also turned out to be one of the largest Hollywood productions so far to take place on the subcontinent.
It is possible that the Russos and Netflix may be hoping to pull off a similar kind of magic with The Gray Man. 2020 hasn’t been kind enough on the biz world with all major announcements related to blockbuster projects pushed for next year. But with the industry slowly bouncing back from the pandemic, it looks like more updates are sure to come our way. Stay tuned.
