Nicolas Cage’s 2007 Ghost Rider and 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance were both moderately successful. The first film grossed $228 million worldwide on a $110 million production budget, while the sequel grossed about half as much as the original. Both the films were rated PG-13. But considering the character’s extreme nature, Cage thinks that both the films should have ended up being R-rated films.
During an interview with JoBlo.com to promote The Humanity Bureau, when Cage was asked about his experience playing Johnny Blaze for Marvel, he said that he wants to see a Ghost Rider reboot that should be an R-rated film.
“Y’know, Ghost Rider was a movie that always should’ve been an R-rated movie,” Cage said.
The actor revealed that David S. Goyer’s original script for Ghost Rider was R-rated. The film was intended to be much darker than it ended up.
“David Goyer had a brilliant script, which I wanted to do with David and for whatever reason they just didn’t let us make the movie,” Cage added.
The actor said that he hopes the film studio gives a second shot to the franchise with another actor and takes it in a Deadpool direction in terms of rating.
“But that movie is a still a movie that should be made, not with me obviously, but it should be an R-rated movie-heck, Deadpool was R-rated and that did great,” Nicholas Cage said. “Ghost Rider was designed to be a scary superhero with an R-rating and edge and they just didn’t have it worked out back then.”
Considering the fact R-rated comic book movies like Deadpool and Logan have been uber successful at the box office, it may be time for the Ghost Rider franchise to get an R-rated revamp to shine.
