‘Nick Fury’s Wife is a Skrull’: Secret Invasion episode 2 fans react to Groot DNA teasing Super Skrull, doubt if Rhodey is compromised, Olivia Colman’s Sonya Falsworth interrogation scene & more

With over a million Skrulls occupying planet Earth, Secret Invasion episode 2 has audiences doubting if all their favorite characters are compromised by the Gravik-led Skrull resistance. But the biggest twist of them all was Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) wife Priscilla (Charlayne Woodard) revealing herself as the shape-shifting alien. So here’s a highlight of all the best moments that has MCU fans puzzled, including Marvel choosing to introduce Fantastic Four’s nemesis from the comics, a Super-Skrull.

Where’s a heavy-hitter like Quake when the former head of SHIELD is direly in need of much backup? Sadly, Fury’s only trustworthy comrade appears to be dead for good. Secret Invasion episode 2 clarifies there is no coming back from Maria Hill’s death by showing her final moments as she lies on the ground in human form. But prior to that scene, a flashback shows a young Nick Fury after the events of Captain Marvel, working alongside the Skrulls to find them a new home. It’s where Nick meets Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) as an orphaned kid and viewers quickly learn the motivation behind the Skrull resistance’s leader: Fury’s failed promise.

Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and Nick Fury address what appears to be a horde of Skrulls that journeyed to Earth hoping for a new home. “This is the promise. While you work to keep my home safe. Carol Danvers and I will find you a new one”. Unfortunately, post the Blip, Nick’s MIA status leads Gravik and many others to believe the SHIELD director has broken his promise, “You keep your word, I’ll keep mine”, which brings to the present-day events where Skrulls are attempting to occupy Earth.

Secret Invasion Fans want to see the Old Nick Fury

As Gravik points out, only “vapors” of the old fury exist after he barely manages to stay alive during the Moscow bombing. He may have even been arrested by Special Agent Sonya Falsworth’s men if it wasn’t for Talos. The two escape by taking a Train from Moscow to Warsaw where Fury engages in a game called “Tell Me Somethin’ I Don’t Know” with his shape-shifting buddy (after dropping a Detroit reference).

Fury learns the Skrulls that fled the Kree’s attack are on Earth (except the colony in Emperor Drogge). The revelation leads to an exchange of words between the two on reasons why Skrulls and humans can’t coexist, “There is not enough room or tolerance on this planet for another species!”

Sadly, it only gets worse for Fury after his break-up with Talos. The meeting with Rhodes (Don Cheadle) to inform him about the invasion goes sideways when the Iron Patriot fires Nick Fury and attempts to escort the former SHIELD director back. As much as it hurts to see the founder of Avengers being dragged by the mud, his parting dialogue to Rhodes offers hope, “I’m Nick Fury, Even when I’m out, I’m in.” Meanwhile, Gravik takes over the Skrull’s members of the council to become its general.

Secret Invasion fans were particularly surprised to see Rhodes pushback against Fury, especially after the turn out of Civil War. It has many wondering if Rhodes has been compromised by the Skrulls similar to Everett Ross (Martin Freeman).

We finally get to the American arrested at the Moscow blast site and alas, Special Agent Sonya Falsworth (Olivia Colman) makes her presence known while interrogating the Skrull. Aside from fans’ favorite Marvel casts, Olivia Colman’s brief appearance was the highlight for many viewers.

Over at the abandoned facility in Russia, G’iah begins to dig for dirty secrets in Gravik’s computer to understand what the scientist Rosa Dalton is working on. She learns they are experimenting with harvested DNA samples from Groot, Frost Beast, Cull Obsidian and Extremis – their special abilities combined together would transform a normal shape-shifter into to a Super Skrull.

In Marvel comics, the first version of a genetically enhanced Super-Skrull was a warrior known as Kl’rt who gained his range of abilities from the Fantastic Four. However, it looks like the MCU is making some changes to its origin. And going by the trailers, Gravik could be the first Super-Skrull as one of the promos showed the resistance leader using Groot’s abilities.

While some Mistook Groot’s sample status as Skrull’s being in possession of the powerful tree-like being, it’s rather the leftover DNA of the adolescent Groot from the events of Avengers: Infinity War, likely obtained from Wakanda.

While Secret Invasion episode 2 takes off slowly, the segment raises the stakes by the end and goes out with a cliffhanger showing Nick Fury going home to his wife, Priscilla, who transforms into a Skrull. Let’s hope there are more answers rather than mystery in episode 3 when it arrives on Disney Plus on July 5.
