RRR has earned a historic milestone for Indian cinema through Naatu Naatu by winning the Best Song nomination at the Oscars 2023. However, several high-profile critics as well as fans of SS Rajamouli and the Tollywood industry are disappointed the Indian blockbuster lost out on the Best Picture nom. Moreover, cinephiles in Hollywood were surprised to see the title missing in the International Feature Film category though that fault lies in the Indian film jury.
RRR’s long Oscar campaign by Variance Film has paid off. Composer M. M. Keeravaani alongside lyricist Chandrabose, Singers Rahul Sipligunj, Kaala Bhairava and choreographer Prem Rakshith have all been named the Best Original Song nominee for the 95th Academy Awards.
SS Rajamouli shared a heartfelt message by also appreciating the efforts of Jr. NTR and Ram Charan for their unique “sync and style” while dancing “their way into the hearts of audiences across the globe.” From Indian actors like Chiranjeevi and maestro like A R Rahman (Who won the Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire)Β to Shazam 2 star Rachel Zegler, actors and creatives from across the biz are showering their praises. Readers can check it out below.
Among the praises also lies a sense of frustration over Oscar’s failure to nominate RRR for Best Picture. The Telugu duo which was even hailed by Avatar 2 director James Cameron was predicted by many to win this year’s Best Film. Meanwhile, Indian Jury’s official entry title, Last Film Show for International Feature Film failed to make the list.

Sorry, but #RRR -and @ssrajamouli should have the Best Picture and Best Director slots that went to TRIANGLE OF SADNESS. #Oscars

Today was a good day for you to nominate RRR and Nope for Best Picture, and you blew it.

Dissappointed to not see RRR compete for Best Picture, but what an historic run for @ssrajamouli @mmkeeravaani @Shobu_, the #RRR cast, crew and the Tollywood & Indian film industries. You put Telugu cinema on the map and youβll still (hopefully) end this run with an Oscar. β€οΈ

Bummed to see that RRR didnβt receive a Best Picture or Best International Feature nomination.
BUT I am excited we get to see Naatu Naatu performed LIVE at the Oscars! pic.twitter.com/7nGkjWuDum

Actually my biggest disappointment is that RRR wasn't nominated for anything but Best Song. No Best Picture,Best Director or Best International Feature.

Nice mix of films in the best picture category, but it would have been so good if "RRR" had made it in. Much more of a leap than the Academy was ready for, I guess.
Happy the song got a nod, one live performance I am definitely looking forward to!— Kenneth Turan (@KennethTuran) January 25, 2023
We had a clear International Picture winner this year. One that had such a winning chance that it probably just about missed out on a Best Picture nom.
The Indian Oscar Selection Committee had ONE job this year, and they screwed up big time. This is unforgivable and sad. #RRR

Naatu Naatu will be competing against Top Gun: Maverick‘s Hold My Hand, Everything Everywhere All at Once‘s This is a Life and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s Lift Me Up. The Telugu song managed to dominate Rihanna‘s song for the MCU sequel at the Golden Globes 2023. Meanwhile, RRR was not the only Indian title to enter the Oscar race as the critically acclaimed documentary, The Elephant Whisperers got a nom in the Best Documentary Short Film category.
The Oscars 2023 verdict will be revealed on March 13, according to IST. Stay tuned for more updates on the 95th Academy Awards and readers can also hit up our writer on Twitter @RAKarthikPrasad to discuss all things related to the prestigous award ceremony.
