Zack Snyder’s Justice League would have been an altogether different film if Warner Bros. had to go with the original script written by Gangster Squad screenwriter Will Beall way back in 2011. The script was written even before Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, or Wonder Woman hit the theaters.
TheWrap has in its possession the original script of Justice League. One can’t help but wonder how the movie would have turned out if the WB had gone with it. While you can check out the detailed script at TheWrap, listed below are few things that stand out.
Justice League movie that hit the theaters last month opened up to negative reviews. The film follows Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) as they go on to form a team of superheroes in an effort to save the earth from the villain Steppenwolf, a New God and member of Darkseid’s Elite. However, in the original script written by Beall, the villain in question is Steppenwolf’s boss Darkseid. The story in the 2011 written script opens with a scene on the world of Apokolips followed by an action scene showcasing Batman, Superman, KGBeast, Killer Croc and Lex Luthor.
Further, the scene includes the shattering of a shark tank on the upper levels of Lexcorp Tower in Metropolis. The scene ends with Desaad (Darkseid’s minion) killing Killer Croc and stealing Kryptonite that Luthor had tried to buy from KGBeast.
Beall’s draft further shows Batman and Superman as friends who were well aware of the secret identities of each other. They were shown as sipping a cup of coffee at Metropolis Diner and talking about heroes like Green Arrow, Green Lantern, and Aquaman before deciding to travel to Central City to recruit The Flash.
Another interesting thing is the mention of the son of Batman and Wonder Woman – Clark Wayne. The original script reveals a romantic history between Diana Prince and Bruce Wayne.
Green Lantern’s John Stewart and Hawkman are the two characters missing in the film. These two characters, as per the original script, tried to stop Kanjar Ro from helping Dessad weaponize the Kryptonite. This leads to an action sequence inside a space-station nightclub.
In Beall’s draft, at the end of the first act, Superman is kidnapped and taken back to Apokolips by Steppenwolf and the Parademons. Hence Batman goes to Themyscira to recruit Diana at the start of act two. All the superheroes then meet Batman inside the Batcave. The script then goes on to get more packed with lots of heroes and villains.
Whether the original story would have done better than the story that actually hit the theaters is something that we can only wonder. Back in 2012, when news of Warner Bros. rejecting Will Beall’s script for Justice League came up, Fox’s Mark Millar had termed it as an “excellent way of losing $200 million.”
Whether the original story would have done better than the story that actually hit the theaters is hard to gauge. While Beall’s script would have brought many new characters to the big screen, the chances of the script getting all messed up with so many characters are higher.
Do you think Beall’s original script was better than Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder’s version of the DC Universe, which finally led to the Justice League that we see in theaters today?
