The Suicide Squad spinoff series, Peacemaker featuring the oddly patriotic “superhero” played by John Cena won’t just be offering the worst Vigilante DC’s ever seen but will also introduce the ant-hero’s “absolute worst father.” A character played by Robert Patrick and earlier reported to be a series regular.
Director James Gunn is known for writing a few of the best and worst Father/Fatherly figure characters and Guardians of the Galaxy films are an epitome of that (Yondu and Ego). But Gunn seems to have outdone himself in writing an even worse Father for DC’s live-action HBO Max series, Peacemaker.
In the Empire 2022 preview magazine, an interview with Gunn speaking about The Suicide Squad TV spin-off reveals that the director pitched the show to HBO as a “kind of like Eastbound & Down meets Watchmen” type show. When the interviewer made a comparison that the Danny McBride-led comedy series was anchored by a glorious asshole, Gunn agreed saying it’s a fair way to describe Peacemaker.
“I think so, yeah. I think “glorious asshole” is a fair way to describe Peacemaker. You know, I write the character so I really love him. I do think he has a lot of good attributes, and he’s trying to do the right thing, but he’s kind of been brought up in a really fucked-up way. And his father’s [played by Robert Patrick] just the absolute worst father I’ve ever written. And I wrote [Guardians of the Galaxy’s] Ego, who killed Peter Quill’s mother with cancer.”
Initial reports had stated Patrick’s Auggie Smith as “a strongly opinionated, vulgar, small-town racist” so it doesn’t come as a surprise Gunn would have done a better job at scribing the role than he did for Ego. It was reported Patrick’s role was a one-season-only deal, it will be interesting to see how his character could impact Peacemaker.
Peacemaker is expected to premiere on Thursday, January 13 on HBO Max.
