Peacemaker season 1 is shattering records left and right with the DCEU series finale even setting an HBO Max streaming record for the biggest single-day performance as a Max Original series. Yet the show still has quite a few unanswered puzzles concerning John Cena’s Christopher Smith – like his sexual preference for starters.

Peacemaker episode 7 delivered more than a few shockers on DC fans – revealing the death of Chris’ Elder brother was an accident caused by Chris himself. But Auggie Smith a.k.a White Dragon (Robert Patrick) certainly wasn’t innocent and earned a deserving death from Peacemaker. But before his demise, the character drops a truth bomb on viewers and confirms Chris’s sexual interest in men as well.
Eagle-eyed fans may have noticed a few teases concerning Peacemaker’s sexuality. And before anyone decides to put on their tinfoil hat to deduce the reason behind his choices, Cena and director James Gunn have weighed in their thoughts on the subject.
Speaking with Empire for the April 2022 issue, Gunn revealed his decision may have been influenced by Cena’s performance:
“Peacemaker is an interesting character because he’s so fucked-up in so many ways, and then in other ways, he is kind of weirdly forward-thinking,” said Gunn. “John does improv all the time, and he just turned Christopher Smith into this hyper-sexualized dude that is open to anything sexually. I was surprised by that. But I thought, “I guess it makes sense that this guy isn’t one-dimensional””
Cena also recalled Peacemaker’s time spent in prison – as shown in The Suicide Squad and seems to have come to the conclusion Chris would be open to “anything”.
“I took the perspective, if this guy has been guided to live a certain way, but is then left on his own – especially serving a term in a correctional facility – you usually go through a period of experimentation. Also, I view him as willing to do anything.”
“We see in the show that he doesn’t have any issues with sexuality,” Gunn further notes. “As long as you’re not fucking animals – that he’s not into. But besides that, he’s pretty open. And yet other things he’s completely closed-minded on.
Well, that answers Chris’s frustration towards Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. Peacemaker season 1 is currently streaming on HBO Max.
