The new take on Power Rangers Movie might have managed to appeal to a section of fans but it’s disappointing box office performance and mixed reviews seem to have persuaded the new parent company, Hasbro to move on and reboot rather go ahead with a sequel. Moreover, none of the cast from the 2017 movie will reprise their roles.
According to actor Dacre Montgomery, who played as the Red Power Ranger in the 2017 reboot revealed the surprising news that Hasbro has plans for another film which won’t include him or any other casts–making it yet another reboot.
Montgomery revealed the disappointing news when he took part in an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on the Stranger Things subreddit in support of the show’s season 3 release on Netflix.
“I think there is a movie in the works but it’s not with me and the cast. So yes but not with us,” Montgomery wrote on the subreddit.
Hasbro is yet to officially announce the said film which is reportedly in development according to Montgomery. But we currently unaware if the project is still in its early stages of development or the studio is already looking at casts and directors for the project. Due to the uncertainty, its possible that the set plans for a new reboot could go through changes. But it seems unlikely that Hasbro would go ahead with a sequel to the 2017 movie since its box office run ended with a disappointing $142 million earning–which barely broke even with its estimated $100 million budget.
Hasbro purchased off the Power Rangers IP from Saban Brands last year and later, CEO Brian Goldner also expressed his desire to develop new feature films and also assured a sequel to the 2017 Power Rangers movie.
Goldner explained that the Power Rangers offered a “significant opportunity for growth given where the brand had been most recently” and added that “Hasbro will work with a film studio to develop a new Power Rangers movie as a follow-up to the 2017 release.”
