Cillian Murphy‘s J. Robert Oppenheimer meets Albert Einstein (Tom Conti) in the new trailer for what looks like Christopher Nolan‘s Magnus opus or at least that is the presumption among Nolan fans. A 3-minute-long Oppenheimer trailer has been released by Universal Pictures. The extended footage leaked earlier this week after being previewed along with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in select IMAX theaters.

Christopher Nolan fans are already sold on experiencing Oppenheimer in IMAX but the latest trailer’s visuals and sound design go a step beyond to convince Cinephiles the movie deserves to be watched in the 70mm format. Right off the bat, the trailer’s eerie radiation meter sound effect captures the destructive nature of this biographical feature that explores the historical event known as the Manhattan Project. It looks like the trailer has the same footage showcased at this year’s CinemaCon.

Robert’s motivation seems clear in the latest promotional footage, “We are in a race against the Nazis, and I know what it means if the Nazis have a bomb.” The trailer shows glimpses of their secret laboratory in construction, a town that was the production site for the Manhattan Project. Matt Damon’s Leslie Groves Jr. is tasked with recruiting the best scientists while a town is being built for them to stay with their families.

From the looks of it, Robert approaches Albert Einstein. Still, it remains to be seen what his inclusion means for the movie since the German-born physicist was deemed a security risk and was denied clearance to work on the Manhattan Project. Readers can check out reactions below.

Albert Einstein’s cameo has been public information for quite some time. But many presumed it would be portrayed by Gary Oldman (he will appear as Harry S. Truman) since the Darkest Hour actor revealed he shot a scene for Oppenheimer. However, it was later revealed veteran actor Tom Conti (known for 2019’s Doc Martin) would play the famed theoretical physicist. The actor also played a Prisoner part in The Dark Knight Rises, according to IMDB.

The trailer also offers the first look at Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer, and Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock. There are also new scenes of Josh Peck‘s Kenneth Bainbridge, The Boys star Jack Quaid‘s Richard Feynman and more.

One particular dialogue that stood out for fans from the Oppenheimer trailer, “You are a man who gave them the power to destroy themselves & the world is not prepared.” The line is delivered by Kenneth Branagh but it is still unknown which real-life character the actor portrays.

Oppenheimer will drop in theaters on July 21, the same day as Barbie.
