Rebel Moon’s limited 70mm screening disappoints Snyderverse fans expecting worldwide premiere: ‘No India release’

Cinema is incoming for Snyderverse fans and it’s called Rebel Moon, an original IP from the director behind ZSJL.  But not all cinephiles across the globe will be able to experience the sci-fi feature in theaters.

Netflix’s plans for a limited and exclusive screening of Rebel Moon in select locations have been met with disappointment as well as joy. One of Zack Snyder’s biggest audience bases, India -will not showcase the film in theaters unlike NYC, Los Angeles, London and Toronto, the locations currently confirmed for a 70mm screening from December 15-21 as reported by Variety. Zack confirmed the announcement with a post on social media, revealing that tickets will be on sale from November 15.

Many of Snyder’s Indian fans have taken to Twitter/X to express their dismay for skipping India. But they are certainly not alone with even stans hailing from other parts of the US have been shattered by the news. While some are making plans to travel to cities where Rebel Moon will screen on the big screens, like the Paris Theater in New York City.

Some folks have campaigned for a worldwide release in theaters but surprisingly, Snyder does not seem to be inclined towards the traditional medium release. The BvS director went as far as to say, “With this, I was not super interested in a theatrical release, especially with the PG-13 versus extended cuts,” Snyder said speaking to Polygon. “I feel like with the theatrical release, the way the model is, it takes some energy out of it.”

Anticipation for the space opera and diesel-punk-themed adventure flick has only amped up since Zack Snyder revealed Army of the Dead exists in the same universe. It remains to be seen if the Sofia Boutella starrer feature would include any subtle references to the AOTD incident on Earth though if Snyder has added a zombie easter egg, it is more likely to be found in the in the extended director’s cut.

Netflix will also release an R-rated version of Rebel Moon which will feature at most 60 minutes of never-before-seen content. The director’s cut is also expected to include new characters that didn’t make the cut for the PG-13 theatrical edition.

Rebel Moon will see Kora recruit a group of mercenaries namely Kai (Charlie Hunnam), Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), Jimmy the battle robot (voiced by Anthony Hopkins), Nemesis (Bae Doona) and more – led by General Titus (Djimon Hounsou) in a fight against the tyrannical Regent Balisarius and the Imperium which threatens a peaceful colony.

Rebel Moon will be available to stream on Netflix from December 22.
