‘Riverdale’: Vanessa Morgan (Toni Topaz) Talks About The Big Reveal

Riverdale is set to return this week with its second half of Season 2. The show is expected to shed light on the storyline of the newly introduced characters. Among many new characters is Toni Topaz, who is Jughead’s speculated potential love interest.

Interestingly, Vanessa Morgan’s character was recently revealed to be a bisexual. This happens to be the show’s openly first bisexual character and the big reveal was made in Chapter Nineteen: Death Proof.

The actress opened up about the revelation and how she feels about it.

“I actually didn’t know they were making Toni bisexual until the press release, but it was something that I knew from the comics. I was so excited when I found out. I find in TV, you don’t see bisexual [characters] a lot. When people see “bisexual,” they still confuse it with promiscuity, which is so wrong. So I was so pumped to be the first bisexual on Riverdale and just normalize that for viewers,” the actress told Cosmopolitan about the big reveal.

Fans know Toni is a student of Southside High and a member of the Southside Serpents. Additionally, she has interest in photography. She is suspected to cause issues in Jughead and Betty’s relationship.

Meanwhile, Comicbook notes that Toni is not only the first bisexual character on Riverdale. In Season 1, Kevin Keller told Veronica Lodge that Moose Mason (Cody Kearsley), who is romantically involved with Midge Klump also approached him.

“I’m super pumped to be part of a show that’s so diverse. It’s casting characters that every person can relate to — having bisexual and gay characters, all ethnicities,” Morgan adds. “Riverdale is up to date with what is the new world and what is 2017. A lot of shows should follow suit, because there are a lot of shows where they don’t have that. They don’t have anything! Growing up biracial, I didn’t have someone to look up to watching TV or movies. Halle Berry was the closest one who looked like me. I’m happy to see more biracial people on screen, and I’m happy to represent for the little girls who didn’t have someone who looked like me on TV.”

Riverdale Season 2 returns Dec. 6 with Chapter Twenty-One: House of the Devil. The CW series stars KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, Casey Cott as Kevin Keller and more.
