RRR for Oscars trends as S.S. Rajamouli gets standing ovation at IMAX screening in Los Angeles, audiences dance for Naatu Naatu song

The Oscar race is still on for RRR as Variance Film goes all-out on the Academy Awards campaign for S. S. Rajamouli’s blockbuster Indian historical epic. The Tollywood flick’s IMAX screening at the notable TCL Chinese theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles was jam-packed but the highlight of Friday night’s screening was the audience’s standing ovation for the filmmaker.

RRR movie’s IMAX screening was expected to be a grand event since the largest auditorium in the world was sold out in a quarter-hour. If that wasn’t enough indication that Hollywood is in love with this anti-colonial feature then audiences’ reaction says it all. Also, It’s being reported that ticket-holders stood in line for two hours before entering the theatre at the Beyond Fest screening.

Clips of attendees erupting in enthusiasm to the title card scene of RRR have only added to the hype train for RRR for the Oscars campaign on Twitter. One video also shows fans dancing in front of the screen for the Naatu Nattu song. Readers can check out the reactions below.

RRR’s success in the U.S. and largely in the western sphere has taken the world by surprise, especially in India. The movie continues to earn praise from creatives in Hollywood which even catapulted the film to rise in the ranks of Netflix’s top 10 streaming titles for weeks.

India may have snubbed RRR from representing the nation in the best international title category but Variance Film, the U.S. distributor for the movie is leaving no stones unturned in campaigning for a nomination in Best Picture, original screenplay penned by Rajamouli & V. Vijayendra Prasad, lead actor for the duo titular stars N.T. Rama Rao Jr & Ram Charan and ten other categories which include the famed Naatu Naatu song for original song. So far, RRR’s tour in Hollywood from meeting studio execs to awards voters is off to a great start.

Meanwhile, Rajamouli was recently at TIFF where the director got candid with IndieWire about his desire to make a Hollywood movie. The helmer has signed on with CAA and his next film starring Indian star Mahesh Babu will feature Chris Hemsworth in an extended cameo. It seems the filmmaker is already testing grounds and if all goes well for RRR with their Oscar efforts, directing a Hollywood film may not be a far-fetched idea.
