DCEU’s upcoming Aquaman will be introducing a whole new cast of talented actors’ portraying interesting characters from the comics. One of the characters that fans are looking forward to is Dolph Lundgren’s King Nereus.
The announcement of Lundgren playing King Nereus raised several questions. Firstly, fans have been keen of finding out the relationship Nereus and Mera would share in the standalone DC film.
For those unaware, in the comics, King Nereus referred to Mera as his wife. It was revealed in Aquaman #13 new 52 that Nereus was the king of Xebel and was also promised to marry Mera by her father.
Since the movie is adapting Geoff Johns’ new 52, fans were expecting to see Lundgren’s King Nereus and Amber Heard’s Mera share the same relationship. But it looks like director James Wan is not interested in exploring the comic arc and may have altered it.
A new shocking rumor claims that the relationship between King Nereus and Mera will be father and daughter. The news comes from Twitter user The Aquaman Shrine who has broken several Aquaman related news in the past.
“Just In: Diverging from comics canon, the relationship between Dolph Lundgren’s King Nereus and Amber Heard’s Mera in AQUAMAN will be father and daughter!”, tweeted The AquamanShrine. Fans can find his tweet below.
The reaction to the news has been mixed as some are rejoicing while the others are concerned about the change. But fans are advised to take the news with a grain of salt till confirmation.
If true, this could change Nereus’ arc entirely for the cinematic universe. Perhaps, he is “not quite villain” as James Wan once tweeted.
UPDATE: In a recent interview, Lundgren has confirmed that King Nereus and Mera share a father-daughter relationship in the movie. Here’s what he had to say:
“It is good to be king. Basically, I try to keep the peace down there along with Amber Heard, who plays my daughter,” said Lundgren. “She’s trying to convince me to join the right side.”
Aquaman hits theatres on December 21st, 2018. Currently, the film’s first trailer is expected to be released.
