Avengers 4 could be the last Marvel film to feature Chris Evans as Captain America, rumors surrounding the possible candidate to take over Captain America mantle have already started making rounds.
Evan’s former co-star actor Frank Grillo, who played Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, has some rough idea about who Marvel might rope in as the next Captain America.
During a recent interview with Larry King, when Grillo was asked to comment on Evans’ stepping down from his role as Captain America, he said he is not surprised by the news.
“No, no,” Grillo said when asked if the news surprised him. “That ran its course, and those guys are all getting a bit old. I love him. He’s a great guy. He’s a Boston kid. He’s a lovely, lovely man.”
When asked if he has any idea who the next Steve Rogers could be, Grillo responded that he has heard rumors that Marvel Studios is likely looking for diverse faces for the role. He added that there are even possibilities that the next Captain America could be an African American and even a woman.
“I don’t know,” Grillo explained. “I don’t know, but there have been rumors that Captain America could be African American. It could be a woman. You know? So they’re looking.”
Evan’s retirement rumors got strength when the actor himself took to Twitter to announce the wrap up of his part of filming for Avengers 4 reshoots through an emotional tweet hinting that the upcoming film could be his last as the fan favorite Marvel superhero.
The actor has even confessed in an interview earlier this year that his contract with Marvel Studios has come to an end.
“Well, you know, my contract is over, so that’s as far as I know,” Evans said. “[I’ll miss] everything [about Captain America]. I mean, it’s not just the character, it’s the people – the experience, such good movies, such wonderful memories. I’ll miss a lot.”
All that being said, Evans’ fans are still hoping that everything turns out to be some sort of promotional gimmick for Avengers 4.
We will find out more when Avengers 4 releases in theaters in May 2019.
