SAG-AFTRA Strike week 1 recap: Ms. Marvel writer asks Marvel Studios for network residuals, Yellowjackets, The Boys, Better Call Saul cast members & more speak up, here’s all celebs spotted at picket lines & more

Since voting to proceed with the SAG-AFTRA strike on July 13, Hollywood’s well-known stars like Kevin Bacon, Better Call Saul‘s Bob Odenkirk & many more have arrived at the picket lines to protest against AMPTP. The SAG members are currently striking for fair pay, higher streaming residuals & other necessary changes to their contract which would safeguard their careers & help the majority of the union members earn higher, especially skilled workers struggling to even be eligible for SAG health insurance.

From actors chanting “We want fair pay” outside studios like Paramount Pictures, and Warner Bros. to A-list celebs, film critics and journalists echoing their voices across social media – the SAG-AFTRA strike has biz industry workers from all walks of life showing solidarity for actors. The Sandman season 2 & several other major projects like Deadpool 3 have halted production though independent filmmakers part of the AMPTP productions will receive a greenlight from SAG to continue production.

Speaking of Solidarity, video clips showed WGA members and SAG picketing together in New York City on Tuesday morning. Some of the other notable faces spotted picketing are Rosario Dawson, Hilary Duff, Francia Raisa, Yellowjackets cast member Liv Hewson, The Boys stars Jack Quaid, Colby Minifie, Aya Cash, Claudia Doumit and How I Met Your Father‘s Tien Tran were spotted striking on Tuesday, July 18.

Earlier this week, more celebs like Susan Sarandon, Olivia Wilde, Mark Ruffalo, Josh Gad, Logan Lerman & more were picketing as well. Meanwhile, veteran actors like Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter did their part on social media to amplify the voice for SAG-AFTRA’s strike

Several supporters including SAG members have noted that the ongoing Actors Strike should not be misconstrued as an effort from the A-listers earning big paychecks demanding higher pay rather it’s the middle-wage earning actors. In fact, according to reports – around 87% of actors union members earn less than $26K which does not qualify them for SAG health insurance. This statement was also echoed by union actors like Bella Cruz (Bliss, Choke).

SAG & WGA members hope Marvel Studios pays network residuals for Ms. Marvel which will air on ABC

Reservation Dogs‘ fan-favorite character Bev, a brief cameo but is praised as one of the best humorous performances of the show. The actress who portrayed the role, Jana Schmieding revealed she receives a shocking low-balled residual of $.03 each quarter. The Native American comedian also added she earns $33.15 in residuals for her lead role in Rutherford Falls.

Studios at the moment are coming up with new strategies in the wake of the Actors Strike. Disney had theme park non-union workers for the Haunted Mansion red carpet premiere since its cast members Jamie Lee Curtis, Danny DeVito, Dawson and Tiffany Haddish were absent.

Another such tactic from Hollywood due to “no new non-reality shows to release” on network television as journalist Richard Newby notes – is Marvel Studios’ surprising decision to air Ms. Marvel season 1 on ABC in August.

Ms. Marvel show’s writer A.C. Bradley (who did the teleplay for the series) was quick to call on WGA’s attention to assure Disney/Marvel Studios “pays the writers network residuals!”. Netflix’s Daredevil writer Steven DeKnight also resonated stating, “The talent better be getting full network residuals” hoping for DGA and WGA committee to also look into it.

Other upcoming projects like Blue Beetle from DC Studios will also suffer from the SAG-AFTRA strike as actors will not be able to participate in press junkets. Though its titular star Xolo Maridueña hopes the fandom will do its part to promote it.

SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher has assured the Actors strike will continue “for the long haul” until AMPTP return to the bargaining table and agree to the terms. WGA is also sitting tight and appears to be more motivated since reports emerged that studios are dragging out so “union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses,” which would result in the union accepting AMPTP’s terms.
