SDCC Day 1 Preview Night recap: DC & Marvel’s life-size statues of Blue Beetle, Aquaman 2, The Marvels, Project K marches at Hall-H, Paramount+’s Yellowjackets & 1923 themed cafe, promos for DBZ, The Creators & more

It’s official SDCC week and studios have already packed the arena with life-size statues for upcoming line-ups like Blue Beetle, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and The Marvels to name a few. SDCC Day 1 kicks off with the preview night for Adult Swim, WBTV and Funkoville showcasing their exclusive new merchandise, here’s a recap of everything attendees spotted on Wednesday night, including the pleasing promos for fan-favorites shows namely The Walking Dead, The Wheel of Time season 2 and much more.

San Diego Comic-Con 2023 has officially commenced and although the SAG & WGA strike has barred actors and writers from participating in the event – comic book writers like Tom Taylor, Tom King and veterans like Todd MacFarlane and Jim Lee will be at the event for signings.

In terms of goodies, attendees shared exclusive SDCC posters for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Dark House Comics booth offering Stranger Things-themed bags and much more. Meanwhile, Nickelodeon has a bigger presence at this year’s con thanks to TMNT Mutant Mayhem. The Teen Mutant Ninja Turtle were all over the show floor sharing the space with other blockbuster franchises like One Piece.

The booths featuring life-size statues like Star Wars: Ahsoka seems to attract more eyes. Similarly for Blue Beetle, Aquaman 2, Carol Danvers’s new suit in The Marvels and the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s characters on display.

TWD Universe, Marvel villains & Star Wars mural & more outside & inside the halls of SDCC

Coming to the eye candy spots at SDCC Day 1, Alex Ross‘ wall murals for Marvel’s villains are one that attendees are sure to admire as well as the Star Wars Rebels Mural & Ahsoka. But prior to entering the exhibition – the marketing for upcoming and recently released shows like The Wheel of Time, The Walking Dead spin-off, Daryl Dixon series can be spotted all over the infrastructures.

Promos for Good Burger 2 and signages for Gareth EdwardsThe Creators. The sci-fi feature will have its own panel on Friday, July 21 organized by Collider’s Steve Weintraub called Directors on Directing.

Over at the Marriott, Bandai has set up its life-size statues for Dragon Ball Z & Dragon Ball Superhero featuring Gohan, Piccolo and Goku to name a few (A Kaiju size Orange Piccolo was erected too). Furthermore, The elevators at the Marriott Marquis were also wrapped with Dragon Ball-themed posters.

And at the Adult Swim festival grounds – huge bobble-head-Esque figurines for Rick & Morty and Smiling Friends were spotted.

Paramount+’s The Lodge appears to be one of the must-visit locations at 2023’s SDCC Day 1. The offsite has been transformed to sport a themed environment featuring 1923, Yellowjackets, SpongeBob SquarePants & more at the Happy Does Bar. Whereas Disney has left no stone unturned to promote Haunted Mansion – theming free bikes with the film’s logo.

So far, what appears to be in the spotlight at the halls of San Diego Comic-Con 2023 and outside the event is AMC’s Immortal Universe. The Activation zone looks like a mini New Orleans with posters of Interview With the Vampire. In addition, Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 is in the limelight at the arena showcasing statues of Miles Morales and Peter Parker’s Spidey.

The Hall-H arena will be seeing a new cinema industry set foot to promote their anticipated sci-fi feature, Project K from India’s Tollywood – the same industry that produced RRR. A group of cosplayers representing Project K were spotted roaming on the Hall-H floor in black armor much similar to G.I. Joe’s Snake Eyes.

While Marvel Studios & DC Studios backed out of a Hall-H presentation – the huge arena will still see other anticipated projects like first looks at The Walking Dead Universe spin-offs Rick & Michonne, The Walking Dead: Dead City, Daryl Dixon. A panel for TMNT Mutant Mayhem is expected to take place too with a preview of never-before-seen footage.
