Fox has confirmed that Shane Black’s The Predator is getting an R-Rating for “strong bloody violence, language throughout, and crude sexual references.” It is the fourth movie in the Predator film series following 1987’s Predator, 1990’s Predator 2 and 2010’s Predators.
While The Predator’s first two trailers weren’t much dark and violent as fans were hoping for, the film’s exclusive footage shown off at the San Diego Comic-Con 2018 event last month proved that the makers have worked hard to earn that R rating. It showed the ultimate predator taking on another small predator.
According to Black, the upcoming film will introduce audiences to the most dangerous predator ever, the Ultimate Predator. It has already been confirmed that there will not be female Predators in the film.
During an interview with SFX Magazine (via Games Radar), Black explained why he decided to revisit a franchise that he hadn’t been involved with for more than 30 years.
“I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great, just as a lark, to go back and be a kid again? What could it hurt to revisit a time that was so special, and a type of filmmaking before video games and CG polluted the market with visual overload? When you’re forced to rely on a bit more ingenuity to conjure the same sort of effects? It’ll be a lark,” the Predator director said. “Let’s do it!‘”
The Predator’s story centers on a young boy (Jacob Tremblay) who accidentally sets off an alert that brings the Predators back to Earth. The film isn’t a full reboot as it continues from the first two installments. The film’s star cast includes Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Augusto Aguilera, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Jake Busey, and Yvonne Strahovski.
The Predator will have its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6. It will debut in theatres on September 14, 2018.
