Warner Bros. had a lot of stuff to share with CinemaCon 2018 attendees. The film studio screened some behind-the-scenes footage from their upcoming superhero film Shazam!. Director David F. Sandberg was in attendance at the event to unveil the footage.
The new footage showed off Zachary Levi as the titular superhero and Mark Strong as the film’s villain, Dr. Sivana who is using his powers to force push people. It had some brief shots of Billy Batson (Asher Angel) yelling “Shazam!,” and a truck falling from the sky.
“The character of Shazam has a very rich history,” Sandberg said during the Warner Bros. presentation. The director said that the film would be accessible to the whole family.
“It is basically the movie Big with superpowers,” Levi added.
Shazam! is currently well into production at Pinewood Studios Toronto. A lot of onset pictures and video clips have already hit the internet offering a good look at Zachary Levi’s Shazam costume. The film’s story is about a teenager boy, Billy Batson, played by Asher Angel, who wishes to turn into a superhero and his wish gets granted. He gets the power to transform himself into a superhero by saying the word Shazam. Doctor Sivana is the main antagonist in the film. He is a notorious mastermind who wants to harness Shazam’s magical powers to fulfill all his wishes.
Recently, it came to light that actor Adam Brody and Ross Butler have joined the film’s star cast which already includes Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans Ian Chen, Jovan Armand and Mark Strong.
Shazam! has been penned down by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. The film is being produced by New Line Cinema in association with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment. Peter Safran is producing the movie along with Dwayne Johnson, Jeffrey Chernov, Christopher Godsick, Hiram Garcia and Dany Garcia serving as executive producers.
Shazam! is set to release in theaters on April 5, 2019.
Also, to note, they showed some BTS footage from Shazam! which was similar to what we saw on set. Levi looks great in costume and it’s referred to BIG with Superpowers. Also got a peek at Mark Strong’s Dr. Sivana using his powers to “force push” people. #CinemaCon
