DC’s next in line comic book movie is of a 14-year-old kid who magically transforms into an adult superhero by just saying Shazam!. Actor Zachary Levi’s bright red-colored Shazam suit is exactly what one can expect to see in a magic-based superhero film. The super suit went through a couple of minor changes over the course of the film’s production, getting a darker and more textured shade.
According to a report coming from SYFY Wire, citing Total Film Magazine, the Shazam! costume cost a whopping $1 million to make. Costume designer Leah Butler revealed to the publication that ten of Shazam suits were made in total.
“Each suit costs, oh boy, upwards of a million? We have ten suits,” Butler revealed.
She revealed that it took around four months time to make the costume.
“It took 16 weeks to build the costume,” Butler said. “We had to scan Zach’s body and start building the costume even before he started his very strict regime — his diet and working out.”
Explaining more about the suit, Butler said that the suit was inspired from the New 52, including the hooded cape, Greek and Roman symbolism and 3D printed texture on the fabric.
“The exterior suit is a spandex suit that goes over a musculature suit, and each muscle has been sculpted on the body of Zach so it accents and highlights his shape and size,” the costume designer said.
Butler revealed that they had wiring throughout the Shazam costume to light up the central bolt and gauntlet.
“There is actually a battery in the back – we luckily had a cape to cover it all up or I don’t know where we would have put all that stuff – and it is remotely lit through a switchboard operator,” the costume designer said. “There is wiring throughout the costume. It’s a 26-volt AA rechargeable battery. It lasts about two hours at full charge.”
David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Mark Strong, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Cooper Andrews, Jovan Armand, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas.
Shazam! will debut in theaters on April 5, 2019.
